Description Okay, I've woken up @_@ I wish I'd gotten more sleep. Time to update the comments on this for real.

This basically took me over a week, although in reality, I'd say it took me four proper nights and days. The skirt, in the end, was the biggest hurdle by far. I personally went through four unique and complete renditions of a skirt animation, and then the Phantom decided he would give it a shot from scratch, and after passing work back and forth between us for a while, this is what he finally came up with for it. I still have really doofy animation files for four other skirts, but, yeah.

Uhm anyways, skirt and time aside, I'm super super happy with this. It was tons of fun, and a totally worthwhile challenge, and I know that there's so much room for improvement, but it feels like a really great step into this realm. And I know a lot more now, for the next time I ever decide I want to tackle a skirt or a dress. Yeah >_> Animating is quite the thing.

Alier belongs to like always~

This sprite looks vaguely Melty Blood styled. Perhaps that was part of the inspiration?

Surprisingly it wasn't! But I have tried Melty style a long long time ago. Generally Melty faces are more "anime" and have larger coloured eyes, and also brighter skin, I think.

It might be fun to try it again, though...

Really? Wow. I'm surprised. How much is it for a sprite of this quality, if you do art for others?

Honestly, I'm not sure... I basically don't do commissions for humans or humanoids, and certainly not for animations of them... if there was serious interest, I'd have to think about it, but it would probably be at least $10 for just a static sprite, if not more. It would depend a lot on what was wanted, but it's been so long since I've done a commission like that or this.

I'm glad you find it impressive, but I don't know if I ever want to put this kind of effort into a thing again D: It was a long and painful experience.

I do
Yeah, there must have been a lot of frames to make :/

Looking back over the numbers... there were 14 sprites for the girl herself, before taking the fairy into account, and the entire animation was 195 different frames each coordinated individually... yeah. Yeah, it was a lot of work xD

Yes, that is exactly the right response

Never subject yourself to this kind of painful work please xD

Holy wow, this is fantastic. You're getting really good!
Making me think I'm going to need to try stepping it up, I've been so slack lately with art, and here you are just zooming ahead.
If possible, when you upload these, can you put a 1x magnification alongside the 2x?

TaviTurnip In reply to GarGar [2012-02-25 01:57:42 +0000 UTC]

I'm... zooming ahead? <3 Gosh, thank you.

I'd been considering that for a long time, but... I really kind of do prefer it this way. And I'm weird about "suddenly changing" because then it feels like I'd need to change all the other submissions to match. This doesn't mean I won't still consider it, but, yeah >.> I'm me. Aside from that, though, the thumbnails for a lot of my stuff do fit the 1x versions entirely, including this art here.

I will consider it, though o:

GarGar In reply to TaviTurnip [2012-02-25 14:17:59 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, so they do indeed fit just fine in the thumbnails, I forgot about that. That's good enough then I suppose, better to have the full at 2x than to just have them both at 1x.

HOLY!! It's so smooth!

On the debate of her skirt, if it's a loose, fluttery material, it coullllddd potentially move like that. The only other thing, maybe her head could move a bit smoother from the slight movement?

Otherwise, it's great!! I couldn't ever do this! o:

TaviTurnip In reply to Haruyou [2012-02-17 18:22:02 +0000 UTC]

... Y'know, I was caught about the head for a while, but in the end I kind of left it as it was. It probably would have done better with another transition frame :c Hmm. I see your point. I'll remember that for next time xD

Thank you~

*ahem...the urm... the fold in the middle of her skirt is a bit off... it makes it look she has a big...um...well...penis.

Ahh >.> Not the first time someone's done that, I'm afraid. I can see what you mean, but I don't think it's too strongly glaring. I'll consider it more carefully next time.

TyraWadman [2012-02-16 08:11:51 +0000 UTC]

Hm...
Methinks the skirt moves too much when the character is moving so little. She's really stiff, absolutely no bending of the knees, even as she's turning. That and her left foot (right from our view) doesn't twist at all.
Also, her back foot (Right, or left from our view) needs another frame so it's not jumping in and out of position.

TaviTurnip In reply to TyraWadman [2012-02-16 17:48:32 +0000 UTC]

I do agree about the skirt moving too much, in the end. But it was basically the hardest part of this entire thing, and after giving it four entirely fresh attempts and just not liking what came of it, I (and my friend) was basically just wanting to get something that was mostly acceptable and to get it all finished. That kind of happens when you've spent a week on something, and it stops being fun ;_;

The original idea was for her to not be moving very much at all. She's a calm and quiet character who has no reason to be moving about all over the place when she's prepared for a fight. But as the work went on, it was pretty clear that she wouldn't have looked very good if none of her was moving much. A lot of sprite animations are very dull because the characters barely move at all, and I didn't want to fall into that dullness, but perhaps the best job wasn't done :c I will consider it all more carefully next time.

Thank you~

This is wonderful!

I like how she doesn't blink as often as we expect, since this is a revolving loop of frames (I'm assuming). I don't know how these things are animated, but if it does involve frames, I think that subtle touch goes a long way. Well, it made an impression on me, to say the least. Most of the time, there's only one revolution, so the blinking occurs more frequently.

Eh, enough of my ignorance

Again, this is really awesome!

TaviTurnip In reply to Alexsauce [2012-02-16 17:42:45 +0000 UTC]

It does involve frames. 195 of them, to be precise. And among all that, there are only 14 unique sprites, plus the blinking and plus the fairy (which in a real game wouldn't all be part of the one main sprite set, I'm fairly sure).

Thank you, in any case :3 I'm one to prefer additional details like that to spice something up, without going too far or not doing enough. It's a delicate balance and I'm happy that I seem to have achieved it here :<
