My other gift for who requested some Shanks x MakinoThe lineart for this was soooo old (file date says 2007!) but the colouring was already half-done when I picked it up again, and so much time had already passed that I didn't want to start over since Avro had waited long enough already. I'm so sorry! :shame: Hope you like it regardless.
Before Luffy had the straw hat, there was Shanks. And similarly, before Nami became the unofficial "hat holder", so too was Makino the original bearer of this duty.
Well, it seemed a cute idea to me.

When I first saw One Piece, I was certain those two were Luffy's parents. Side note: 10 bucks says Makino's baby post-timeskip is Shanks' kid.

Ha, but I wonder why the Shanks/Makino pairing is so rare...especially with the beginning where Shanks and his men always go to Makino's pub and he's the only one sitting at the bar chatting her up.

I would've assumed it's because Makino's had so little screentime, but then that has stopped the popularity of Shanks/Ben. So I'm guessing it's because she's not an 'important' character, which is a shame really. I also noticed those little bits with them in the bar.

And for your "no romance" comment. Oda has actually given the series a bit of romance recently. But they only seem to manifest as 1-sided crushes. (Absalom, Hancock, Camie, etc.)

Ah, I guess... but it isn't really a ROMANCE, you know? They're too light-hearted (i.e. Hancock, Camie) or too ridiculous (i.e. Absalom, Sanji) to be really considered something of romantic nature. Ha ha.
But you never know...Oda tends to surprise us in the most UNLIKELY moments with the most UNLIKELY things... =__=U

Oh for serious romance I just don't think Oda will ever do that. He seems bent on doing light-hearted gag stuff like you mentioned. Though I'll never say never - hey anything could happen. Just strongly doubt it (seems too far out of Oda's realm.)
For Shanks/Makino, well Shanks isn't getting any younger. If Gold Roger could have a special lady, then why not? Maybe towards the end of the series we'll find out she's carrying his child.

Heh, a commenter once mentioned that they thought hats were used instead of engagement rings in the OP world. I'm inclined to agree.
Of course, the "hat trick" usually needs the right type of hat for the right woman to guarantee success. As we know, it doesn't work for just anyone.

I think the possibility of it will be even likelier if he does turn out to be a devout Utopianist. And I kind of hope he does, because that would be messed up and interesting.

Basically someone trying to create a perfect or idealistic society. We know Dragon's a revolutionary but we don't know the reasons 'why' yet (to take down the WG or change the world completely.)
If he is, I find it amusing to think that his method of spreading "The Will of D" throughout the world is to impregnate various women and create a superhuman race of Luffies and Aces. But it's so dark and twisted, it's highly unlikely Oda would ever go that route.

And I say that Dragon's reasons are clear: the World Government is corrupt and, being a "D", he's trying to change things, because characters with the initial "D" have a thing about changing things wherever they go.
That theory is so far-fetched and unlikely. Garp, Jaguar, and Gold Roger come to mind when I think of reasons why that wouldn't be likely.

Kind of. But Crocodile also used that as a front to get his hands on something of a doomsday device. He was mainly power-hungry.

But I don't think an Utopian theory is that out there. Anyways, I'd be disappointed if it did turn out to be just 'taking down the WG because it's corrupt' and nothing more. Waaay too expected and simplistic. The man's supposed to be the biggest mystery in OP, so I'm hoping there'll be some expanded or ulterior motives revealed that will catch us by surprise. (Though I think I will be let down there.)
