Description Final project for my advanced watercolor class. We had to illustrate a concept from a short story the teacher assigned.

...That was Rodney. He was smaller than most of the kids, although he wasn't the littlest. Rodney had a bad leg, from where his mother's boyfriend beat on him. He had to drag that bad leg behind him when he walked, and he couldn't run at all...

...Rodney cried every night, but I never said anything.
Nobody ever visited him.

Great job...I really appreciate water colors because it is something I have always struggled with. In fact in the past when I've wanted to create something that has a water color quality I resort to digital rendering! The written excerpt that you chose is powerful and brings the image to life. The more and more I look at this image I want to just open the window, pick the boy up, and take him to a ball game or do something to remove the evidence of his frown! Nice use of shadowing, the only suggestion I think I would make would be to include some discrepancy on the window panes to make them look like glass...or even a little fog from the boy's painful sighing! Excellent work!!!

what a fantastic crit, thank you so much! i really appreciate all the kind words. I'm glad you feel strongly for the poor boy- when I received the story to illustrate it, I got so bummed out!

I agree with you on the window pane idea- I'm not even sure how I'd go about rendering something like that! I suppose the next window scene I do, I'll have to try that idea out. : )

many, many thanks!!

Your very welcome such a great piece of art deserves a crit! As far as the window panes are concerned even small brush strokes to imply scratches or even a reflection of the sun....great work! I look forward to more work to come!

Absolutely wonderful colours.
I'm a big fan of the '40-'50s (or so?) colours and illustrations.

thanks so much! i wasn't going for that color scheme purposely- it ended up being a pleasant surprise when I finished. Ever since then, I've been trying to replicate what it was I did in this piece. effin' hard, man...

Yeah... I'm not sure, but I suppose it's a lot of yellow and red.

Thats nice. You kept the warmth that is so inherent to watercolors, yet there's plenty of dark emotion in the painting. You can feel the angst in the child's life. Very good.

That lighting is amazing. And the whole picture does create a very lonely, almost trapped kind of feeling. Poor fellow.

thanks, jaine! <3 i'm glad the lighting came out the way I had planned. i never considered using shadow and light in such an intense way like this. guess i gotta keep doing that from now on, haha...

are you working on anything new lately? are you taking chibi requests? ; ) we should do a trade of some sort, now that i'm on my winter break and I have some time to indulge.

Only just read this now! I finally have an internet connection that I can use pretty much whenever! Hoorah!

I'm not really working on much. As always I have plenty of ideas but nothing seems to ever come of them. I've found it so hard lately to actually finish art! And I've even found it hard to START art. It's really scary. The only thing I've been doing lately, is drawing people I know in real life in my chibi style! I did a few as Christmas presents and more and more people keep asking me to draw them as a chibi or just a picture in general. I LOVE it so much. It's awesome to feel real appreciation from people.

But I would love to do a trade! OMG yes. Only if you have time. And like, I have no idea what I'd like a picture of!

Hope you are awesome Miss Tina~~! <3 <3

thanks so much. : ) i think as children, we all felt isolated at some points... I know I did. I hope your recollections are nothing too sad!

Mallet In reply to tberardi [2007-12-21 12:56:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, not so much... In fact, as a teenager I felt much more isolated than in my childhood. That's great when you finally find out, after periods of loneliness, that you can make true friends... and that special people really wish to love you

I couldn't have said it better myself... I was really isolated as a teen, by choice. Now I surround myself with people who i KNOW care about me. That's what matters in the end. : )

Wow, I think we have more things in common than I thought!
If you isolated yourself sometimes, maybe these situations have made you more conscious about what we feel inside the true loneliness... that can explain the atmosphere of this work...
Yes, in the end, "Love is all" (like that Yes' song, have you ever heard?) XD

no one ends up visiting poor Rodney... but he does receive a cute little dog to keep him company. (except the dog gets taken away. poor kid just can't win.)
