Digital Extremes has confirmed that Equinox is a female regardless of the form she takes. Adam Ma and Rebecca Ford have made several statements regarding it since 2015. A lot of people get confused about this, because Equinox certainly does have an androgynous nature to her. After all, she is a reference to the Sino-Roman concept of the Yin-Yang. However, on close inspection you can see that when she switches forms, her physique remains essentially the same (for instance her lower legs, hands, and waist are the same proportions). All that really changes is the armour she wears.

I like to think of Day Equinox as like a woman in plate armour , not quite like the skin tight catsuits that 90% of the Warframes wear. Day Equinox is very much combat oriented, and so she dresses more utilitarian. Night Equinox is very much support oriented, so she dresses more casual.
