Description It's U-511 (Yuu), the type IX U-boat from Kantai Collection.
EDIT: Cropped some of the border and changed the Background gradient... twice

Primarily, I mainly wanted to draw this because I wanted a new lock screen for my iphone and ipad :v
Secondly, I find the character's voice heartwrenchingly cute when she says "Danke" (and she is my favorite submarine in the game :v)
Thirdly, I also wanted to see if I can refine my techniques and see if I can speed up my workflow faster with more practice.
Fourthly, I also wanted to try to practice drawing more Moe style works.

Looks very nice

As cute as RO is, U-511 is best sub (She will just remain a high level unremodelled Yu-chan~!)

(For the third you could always *cough* partake in the one-draw submissions as a nice way to force a time limit )

Indeed

What exactly do you mean byΒ  "one-draw" submission? I am intrigued.

Its a daily thing that is posted on twitter where you are given a set topic (For Kancolle or GuP its generally 3 characters, but others may vary). The soft time limit is one hour though I know that some (myself included) tend to go over.Β

Ahh so that what those 60 min things I keep seeing,

So in essence, I just have to put the two tags on the daily event and tweet it, is that how it works?

Yeah pretty much. Just the daily tag and the general onedraw tag.

Thanks for the info, I just tried it right now and it seems this can help with practicing

Yeah it does have a way of forcing you to adapt a faster workflow

I have to wonder how she can talk underwater.Β

Magic?

Or
because she is a WWII, sub, she doesn't talk (ie use the radio) until she surfaces

If it's Yu, Imma insta-like haha!

Some advice - if you want to make either solid colour or gradient background (unless its Β a wall), better to not put shadow behind it - unless your intention is to make some pop-up effect. Try playing with depth-of-field effect (blur) or stroke instead :3

Plus it's better to use complementary colour for bg (in this particular work use adjacent - not much triad because the gold colour is not too much use here)!

And owh, remember rule of third as well!

Thanks

I was trying to experiment with more depth of field effects, usually, I duplicate the line art 2x and gaussian blur it, but here I wanted to see if I add a little bit of darkness behind the image it would work, but I see that it looks more like a shadow as you said.

!!! I didn't realize the BG looked purple (it looked greyish on my Yiynova tablet)

I made some the changes you proposed

The bg is gray (I can guarantee that my monitor is colour accurate - so your yiynova is ok ).

You may want to try use the same Yu's colour pallete as bg, but lighter (or darker - play around!) to allow differentiation between bg and main drawing.

If you want to use gradient, probably use white as the other end is not appropriate - again, use back Yuu's colour pallete :3

For depth of field effect, use blur brush tool and manually blur out the character from side/below/top - but careful not to use too much pressure as well as accidentally blurring the focus point of your art (in this particular case the face).

PS: I'mma no pro but hopefully my comment helps haha!

Bg should look more greenish blue now

Ill keep in mind andΒ  try to remember to manually blur the image itself on the non focal points in the future (not just the lines itself) :3

and by the way, I am curious as to how do you get your line art so crisp and thin, what kind of brush size do you use and canvas size do you usually work in ?

falscheShido In reply to TealGuardian [2017-03-06 19:50:16 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, I'm trying to run away from using crisp line haha. But old habits still kicks in

Personally, I do not think crispΒ line works well with my current colouring style (semi-cell shaded). But it may goes perfectly with the cell-shaded colouring as well as for comic linearts.

I think I did mentioned before somewhere in my journal but my default working space is 2976px x 4209px (A4 size) with the 360 ppi. Although sometimes for the submission, I downscaled it to maximum width of 1080px and 300ppi. Last time I did try 4k resolution with 300ppiΒ but it totally eats up my RAM. So instead, I go for higher ppi instead of resolution.

I'm not too sure for Clip Studio Paint but in SAI I'm using Ink Pen tool with the sharpest edge shape.

Usually, I'm using the size of 3.0 for normal stroke and 5.0 for thicker stroke - depending on needs (PS: Kizuna Ai fanart totally uses 3.0 stroke, while my Iku fanart uses combination between 3.0 and 5.0).
