Doesn't that man have the Jaw of Doom? >sigh< .... Good job depicting his direct, intense gaze. Another strong part is the carefully considered part in his hair. I wonder, though, if you might be fighting the tooth in your paper somewhat. I can really see the grain of the paper as you bear down on the dark areas, less fluid lines. That's not a bad thing at all, it adds lot of character, but have you tried Strathmore paper? I had to switch over myself at one point. Sure is easier to find the Canson, though. This is a really nice study, good job.

I don't know-- I don't use a lot of different pencil leads either-- HB is where it's at, in my book, a good choice unless I need a REALLY dark black, in which case go for an ebony. Which I don't mostly, because my pencils tend to be inbetween stages between nothing and inks, watercolor, or CG. I hate those H pencils-- those are only good for drawing on tracing or coated paper where you don't need a lot of unattatched graphite dust gunking everything up. With a smoother paper you might not have to be so impatient-- try doodling on a file card to see what that will do for you. You might also try a kneaded rubber eraser-- those are incredible for pinpoint erasing, or just lifting whole areas of graphite off so you can detail an area better.
Did you see this guy? He's got some really impressive technique. I envy him. [link]

Most of the HB leads I go through are from mechanical pencils and lead pointers.
Thanks for the link to Graphite Cat. I'd have to agree that her technique is really amazing.
Here's another guy I found recently: his technique isn't as polished, but the composition and ideas are neat. [link]
