Masters Of The Universe

Thirty-five years ago one of Mattel’s lead designers, Roger Sweet, presented the first concept designs for what would become “He-Man.” He crafted three different models showing He-Man as a barbarian, a soldier and a spaceman. Mattel selected the barbarian model to be the basis of a new toy line for the company and a legend was born.

He-Man’s story began in comic book form in the early 80s. Mattel hired a team to create more characters and fully flesh out the world he would inhabit for the mini-comics that were included with the action figures. By 1983 the success of the toy line precipitated an animated series called Masters of the Universe (MOTU) which became one of the most popular children’s shows of the 1980s. The show followed the adventures of He-Man/Prince Adam and his pet tiger Cringer/Battle Cat as they defend the planet of Eternia and the magical fortress of Castle Greyskull from the villainous clutches of Skeletor.

Princess Of Power

Mattel successfully tapped the young female demographic by introducing “She-Ra,” He-Man’s twin sister kidnapped at birth by Skeletor. She had her own spin-off series, She-Ra: Princess of Power, which continued the just-concluded MOTU series in 1985 with many of the He-Man characters making appearances in the new show. In this storyline, She-Ra/Princess Adora is the leader of the Great Rebellion, a group of freedom fighters trying to free Etheria from the ruthless rule of Hordak and the Evil Horde.

To the excitement of many, there have been new developments in the quest to get a new He-Man movie to theaters. Some will recall there was a Masters of the Universe movie in 1987, but its poor box office numbers discouraged studios from revisiting the franchise until now. Part of the original film’s tepid reception was attributable to the film wandering far afield from the original conception and storylines of He-Man and his world.

With a new Masters of the Universe script recently completed by Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow for Sony Pictures and what appears to be the concept art for Battle Cat being revealed by DeVon Franklin, S.V.P. of production at Columbia Pictures via Twitter, this new adaptation might just have what it takes to make it to the big screen.
