Description This is a little of what I've been doing lately, it's a shirt or vest of chainmail. As it's my first project large or small, involving chainmail, it has a few mistakes in it but overall I'm quite happy with how it turned out. The sides are closed up and it fits somewhat tight. Taking it off and putting it on are a bit of a hassle but I'm able to do both without any assistance. Modeling (sort of) the vest is myself. To say that this is time consuming is a vast understatement.

In case you wanted to know the details are as follows:

The weave is European 4 in 1.

The ring size is 14 awg with an inner ring diameter of 3/8"

It took me maybe a full month of on and off work on it to finish. (technically it's not finished yet but close enough.)

Questions & comments more than welcome.

This is so sick, I have been wanting to do this for a while now but never had the final push to actually start. Yours looks awesome!

Hi there..just joined Deviant Art today inspired by your vest...

Somehow, the 45 degree angle seems give the mail more density.

The vest is inspiring.

cheers

How did you connect the two sides afterwards.

I like that a lot. I'm working on my second shirt now and I think I've fallen for the 45 degree bias weave. Makes 4-1 look so much more exotic. I'm planning to make a full byrnie (to the knees shirt, split to the crotch back and front), with full sleeves. Any hints/tips/suggestions with working on a bias as opposed to normal 4-1? How did you do the armpits?

I only made this one which I then turned into a more traditional shirt which now weighs around 14 lbs. I have no plans to make any more in the near future though.

And remember kids, the funnest part about having a friend with a chain mail vest is: it gives you free license to slap him on the back as hard as you can once every 10min's!

Yeah, You SO cannot do that anymore... It was funny the first 42 times, now it's ridiculous.

That depends on how 'scratch' we're talking here, I took wire and made the rings myself, coiling them around a steel bar. But as for the wire, I didn't make that, it's electric fence wire I got from a local farm supply store.
If nothing else, it's cheaper that way.
