Yes, this person was insisting that he could find higher-quality art for far cheaper, and thus felt that Teirads' was wrong for raising her prices. It makes me mad. Artists are not machines yo, are people forgetting that you can't live on $0.25 a hour? (What some poor artists I've seen get paid basically)

omg that's ridiculous e_______e YEAH EXACTLY LIKE? most artists are barely getting paid minimum wage (if at all, like you said!) for their hard work which requires a skill that takes years to develop???? these artists are not people who're getting paid big bucks to get their art mass-reproduced and sold as $12 for a poster.
it's such a vicious cycle, because it's either the artist charging low prices to garner interest or customers only seeking artists who charge low prices, so it feels like the 'demand' is more there, especially on places like dA, and thus the value of art plummets if you don't have a dedicated audience ahrhrhhsdh preaching to the choir here but huffs ;_;
that's not even touching on how insulting it is to tell an artist 'hey i can find better work than yours' on TOP of saying 'your art isn't worth it'!? uuughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
i'm sorry you had to deal with this, teirads ;_; and god bless you vespisia hi5555 >8(bbb

-hugs- I was in the middle of replying to the jerk, but you hid the comments, so I guess that's over and done with. What a very rude person.
I'll note you instead, Teirads. <3
Also to anyone who wonders about the way art should be priced, I ask you to look at this, it's a very good journal on why art is so undervalued and needs to be priced better and why artists shouldn't hurt themselves like this:
Pricing Commissions - Updating Opinion GuideMore points are added when needed, and many of those points come from readers who comment below!
Please share this if you like it by posting a journal or a poll linking to this. Spread the word and the awareness to both buyers and sellers!
I've been asked a couple times already about how I price my commissions. Often, I think it's because I tend to price my work higher than a lot of other artists, yet people are still willing to buy. I think this journal will sum things up quite nicely (from my personal viewpoints.)
Contents:
A Brief Econ Class
So how do I price, then?Frequent Concerns
My philosophy for pricing art is actually best illustrated by the opening page of this chapter of AKB49 (a manga based off of popular idol group AKB48).
So what does this mean? "Because... it really is delicious" represents the idea that something can be sold for a higher price because demand is high. Time for a quick economics class!

That's because they're undercharging themselves due to people like you who want it cheap. Art is a job too, and while more subjective than wage-paid/salary-paid jobs, does not mean they should be getting $1-3/hr for their hard work. T_T And there ARE artists who charge per hour like a salary-paid job, thus proving all the more it can be a job, and should be treated and respected as such.
In fact, I was considering commissioning Teirads in a few weeks when my paycheck comes in if she is still open, so no, don't jump to rude conclusions please.

there's absolutely no need for this kind of rude comment and if "better" artists are charging less, you're taking advantage of them bc their skill is worth far more than what you offer

Oh man. I saw my journal get shared and I came to take a peek. Looking at that user's page, I wonder if he's from a country with a lower cost of living. Akai mentioned that entry level jobs in her country, from even the higher paying end, is around 3USD/hour, so she wasn't comfortable with charging more than that. Regardless, I'm happy this is resolved!
