Description This started out as an attempt at creating a template so I could test out some variations of my design for Reina's armor and other outfits. But it just kept getting more and more involved, and eventually I just decided to go the whole nine yards and ended up spending most of yesterday working on it. Also, I think I've finally got a solid grasp on where and how her prosthetic arms attach at the biceps.

Reina's phisique is similar to that of a gymnast, with well-developed biceps, deltoids and trapezius muscles, and a compact, robust frame.

I've got to give a shout-out to here, for introducing me to this painting technique. This is my first try at it, and I'd say it turned out pretty well (though the hair turned out kind of flat. Oh well).

cool, I have a few questions though...

what material is her prosthetic limbs plating/covering/exterior composed of?

what are her prosthetics "muscles" made of? hydraulics? myomers? reactive liquid crystal layer?

is her physical strength limited to her organic muscles that the cybernetics are connected to? (for instance like her shoulders seem organic so above the bicep she'd have normal strength)or does she have subdermal musculature augmentations?

I'm kinda detail oriented...sorry if you didn't expect some sort of spanish inquisition...

I've learned from past experience. These days, I always expect the Spanish Inquisition. I'm pretty detail-oriented as well.

As for what exactly the exterior layer of her prosthetics is made of, that's the only question I don't have a definite answer for. I'm just going to say "futurey stuff" for now.

Her prosthetics are motivated by bundles of artificial muscles which respond to electrical stimulation.

Her non-prosthetic musculature does have some degree of "super-human" strength. One of the concepts I've played around with is hybrid synth-organic materials: artificially created materials which can be grafted into an organic body, and actually grow into it. Much or Reina's natural musculature has been augmented with thin bundles of synth-organic muscle grafted in-between her natural muscles.

Cool
I've gone through some of your earlier stuff and read a bit more on what you've described before,
as for the "futurey stuff" i kinda get what your talkin' about, like a sort of semi-flexible-yet-durable-ballistic-plasticy-composite stuff? have you heard of a new game coming out called Cyberpunk 2077? 'cuz in that they've described a sort of armored synth-skin idea i thought was interesting.

on the artificial muscles, thats sort of what i meant by Myomers... if you don't know, they're basically a synthetic material that reacts like a muscle when you put a current through it, right now all they've built with them are like... robot fish... (i find it frustrating that we have the technology to build synthetic muscles, incredible animatronics for movies and nobody is making proper mechanical limbs for people... much like my frustration at our current space programs... seriously go watch a show about the mars rover... the damn thing looks like it's built outta legos and tinfoil,it wouldn't work on earth!) sorry about that had to get that out there... anyway...

i like the synth-organic material idea, it would make cybernetic augmentation and integration more seamless and fix alot of interface problems that would arise, y'know like accidentally rippin' yer' arms off tryin' to flip a truck or move a sofa on account of your twiggy organic bits bein' to feeble to support the strain. anyway thanks for the explanation... sorry for writing an whole gorram article as a response...

Why does she not have the root nasion of her nasal bridge anywhere near her nasal bones? Also what happened to her sternocleiodalmastoids?

As for the nose, that's just a stylistic choice. She has a defined face, and I felt that making the sides of the nose too harshly delineated would interfere with her signature look.

As for the other thing... Gorram. I'm familiar with anatomy, but I'm not that familiar. I'm assuming it's a series of muscles connected to the sternum, based on the name. You might have to clarify.

The neck looked modified, but it's hard to explain how. Sweet modular design though.

I'm loving this character's development. She's got a good bit in common with my character Face, but your presentation is by far above what I've managed so far.

Good stuff!

Nice! Good job on your first try!
Ok! I understand that she's augmented but the ports (or bolts) found on the sides of the torso, what's their purpose? Sorry, if you already answered that, but I may have missed it somewhere.

The studs are data ports. They simply allow more direct access to the augmetic systems embedded in her torso. There are also a series of studs / data ports running up her spine allowing for greater neural connectivity with both medical equipment and even mech and starfighter control systems.

That's awesome, in one of my older ideas, a Cyborg character of mine had an array of 4 of those on his back for use with Vehicles, mecha, and especially powered armor

Just a quick question, but how powerful is Reina as far as physical strength goes?

Tekka-Croe In reply to MeisterSpade [2013-02-05 03:55:05 +0000 UTC]

She's stronger than the vast majority of humans. However, brute strength isn't the main focus of her augmentations so much as speed and agility. Basically, she's very strong, but not so much that her strength becomes a "Sonic Screwdriver" able to get her out of any situation.

What does this painting technique entail? It came out really well!

It's pretty interesting. Instead of laying down base colors and then shading on top of them, you start with a neutral medium-dark gray as the base for everything. You then do all of your shading (and I mean all of it. Shadows, highlights, everything) in grayscale. You then use layers set to "overlay" above the rendered gray base to add the colors.

made a gif of the grayscale process: [link] And the finished version, with color overlay: [link]

Heh. I can't do it all that well. I have this massive mental block using the full range that my work just looks washed out or way too pastel. >.<

I really like her "augs". I've been having a hell of a time trying to get my lady's too look right. He painting looks good too, if this is the first attempt, then I can't wait to see your 10 edition of this technique.

Are her prosthetics permanently attached or are they swappable?

Tekka-Croe In reply to jackjumperD3 [2013-02-05 00:25:14 +0000 UTC]

Her augmetic limbs can be detached and stripped down for maintenance, but it's a time-consuming process. She can't just swap out one of her arms for a Metroid style arm-gun, if that's what you mean.

That's pretty good!

The painting technique really fits here - seems to be good for character concept art
