Description The annual Novus Imperium sketchdump, 2016 edition!  This year I'm going to try making the full-resolution version of the image available without having to click "Download."  If people have issues loading it, though, I may set it to work the same way as in previous years.

Last year, I got a lot of questions about what specific sketches were meant to represent, and one viewer recommended that I add some designations to the sketches which correspond to the image description:

R1: An attempt at rendering a fairly mundane scene aboard the Cirrus, and a first-pass at the internal structure of Reina's cybernetic limbs.  The image actually got a bit closer to completion than the version presented here, but this was (in my opinion) the cleanest version of the image I already had saved off.

R2: I'm sure there's a real name for this kind of weapon, but I've simply designated it "Punch Knife".  It's visible in its sheath in the center image of  , at the small of Reina's back.

R3: A sketch of Reina in the field.  I wanted to show the way that the retractable data-plugs housed in her fingers could be used to peek around corners.

R4: Design work for revisions to Reina's armor, many of which made into the current iteration.

R5: An illustration for faceplate-artwork that will eventually be appearing on my newly-acquired Qanba Q2 Pro arcade stick.  It also shows recent refinements to Reina's civilian clothes.

R6: The rough sketch which eventually became the centerpiece of the 2016 version of Reina's armor.  The sketch was inspired by a painting that Eddie Smith did while working on Halo 2 (which can be seen here: i.imgur.com/FPJDik0.jpg )

T1: A colored version of one of my Inktober sketches, depicting Doc Haplace, the Cirrus crew's medic.

T2: Designs for Tyr, the crew's sharpshooter.

T3: A physique sketch of Trent Valimund, the crew's captain.

C1: Cirrus interior sketch; personal cabin.

C2: Cirrus interior sketch; maintenance compartment.

C3: Cirrus interior sketch; maintenance access corridor.

C4: Sketches for the current iteration of the Cirrus.  The ship's shape has been altered to have a less aggressive profile, owing to its origins as a small science vessel.  A clean and detailed orthographic of the Cirrus should be showing up sometime this year.

C5: Cirrus interior sketch; bridge.

M1: A design for a ration-cube dispenser.  Ration cubes are rarely the first choice of meal, even in the field, but most soldiers/operators carry at least one dispenser in case of emergencies.

M2: Instant ramen, IN SPAAAAAACE

M3: A small civilian transport ship.

M4: An extremely basic reference mesh of a Karic frigate, built in Sketchup.

K1: A colored version of an Inktober sketch, depicting Reina and her squadmates, Phoebe and Gray, prior to Reina's defection.

K2: A sketch showing Gray geared up in his armor's bodysuit, with and without the plating kit.

K3: More colored versions of Inktober sketches, depicting a Karic infantryman on the left and Karic Special Forces' Captain Bannon on the right.

K4: Design exploration for Karic military firearms.  Karic's standard military aesthetic emphasizes boxy, chunky shapes, with clean color blocking.

K5: Another colored Inktober sketch, of Karic's Yeti exo-suit chassis.

K6: A colored Inktober sketch, of a Karic automated support mech.

As to the Corrupted sketches in the upper right corner:

The large maroon-and-lavender mech is just another iteration of the same Corrupted mech that's showed up in the last couple years' sketchdumps.

The sketch down and left of the mech is a design for a Corrupted scout.

And of course, if you have further questions feel free to leave those in the comments below.

did you use a programm to arrange those drawings instead of doing it manually?

No, I arranged them all by hand.  Looking back, I wish I had found a way to lay the sketches out so that there was less unused gray space.

hot damn I swear NV sketchdump is the highlight of my year.

the Corrupted scout looks honestly fantastic. Really like the Halo Reach style Elite elements along with the Warframe aesthetic.

Really makes me want to commission a large scale Corrupted with glossy armour or something

I can see on the Cirrus you've marked out the Stardrive engines and the smaller maneuvering engines on the wings,
Do the Starships use any sort of micro thrusters mounted to various points all along the hull like Elite Dangerous's ships, or repulsor/gravity/hover panels built into the hull like Starwars or can they only use those main engines?  because if they break off then your dead in space.

These are all fantastic, and I love how the color pops and is so definitive. Especially the skin tones. I think my favorite bit about your pieces is that I can get a sense that there is a deeper world that it all connects to, and that you have thought out each individual pieces to make it a real and thriving universe. Which is something I strive to do with my sci-fi works.

I would really like to know more about the break action revolver above T3, i feel like its something personal and special to a character, rather than a standard issue piece.

I always enjoy seeing all the different stylistic exploration that gets put into these. I know you work from pencil drawings a lot, but how do you go about creating really crisp, dynamic linework like in R5, if you don't mind me asking? I've started messing around with Photoshop after a 2-year hiatus, and it's the "inking" process that's been giving me the hardest time.

Tekka-Croe In reply to renaldohoek [2017-01-09 21:23:33 +0000 UTC]

I kind of cheated on R5.  For that kind of refined lineart, I've been using the "Lazy Nezumi" input-smoothing tool, which can be found here: lazynezumi.com/  It makes it a ton easier to keep digital lines clean without having to do a ton of manual clean-up work.  It's certainly possible to get similarly smooth lines working without a smoothing tool, but it's extra-difficult if (like me) you work with a non-screen style tablet.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I have an old BambooPen tablet that's reliable -if nothing else- but makes technical work something of a trial. I'll have to check out this program, it looks like it has a pretty broad application.

Those Ration Cubes could use a little fleshing-out. Namely things like date codes to indicate when they were packed, and menu information on the sides, assuming there's actual food in those, and some kind of synthetic paste.

M1: Space-age PEZ Dispenser

I really love these sketch dumps. There is so much background and detail... It warms my heart.

I love your designs. They are aesthetically pleasing yet have function. It makes me wish that they were real. Even if they really worked or not, the visuals are just so compelling to me. I'd be amazed if someone cosplayed as Reina.

Truly incredible! Your style is a perfect mix of familiar scifi elements and unique personal ideas (looking at you, sword armatures), and each interesting detail sparks a dozen questions about the world you have clearly poured your heart and soul into crafting. Thank you for continuing to share your incredible art with the online community, I can't wait for more.

On a side note, do you have any recommendations on sources for learning about color theory/usage? Your work seems to strike an interesting balance, and I was unsure if this was from formal education or personal experience.

Most of my knowledge regarding color comes from personal experience/trial and error.  I learned a bit from art courses in school, but it's nothing you can't find in any basic tutorial.

One bit of advice that I can give is to never use true neutrals.  I use a lot of grays in my design work, so I try to make sure that every gray I use has at least a little bit of a color cast to it.  An obvious example is Reina's armor.  The "black" bodysuit has a distinct bluish cast, and the gray plating has a very slight purplish cast.  It lets the design retain a sense of color and vibrancy, even though it's dominated by seemingly neutral tones.

So when I was a little kid in elementary school you were one of the biggest inspirations to me with legos as I wanted to build things just like you. Over time I grew out of legos and got heavily into drawing  looking at others and now I'm way older and in college now.. I find your work again but now with art and you still inspire me man. Thank you for being a catalyst in my creativity and Thank you for inspiring me.

(I suddenly feel very old.)  I'm always surprised when people who know me for my Lego pop in here on DA.  I'm always glad to hear that I've inspired someone!  Your work is pretty darn good, too.  Your digital technique is a lot farther along than mine was when I was starting college.

Thanks for dropping in!
