Description
As an island in the northern Atlantic ocean, it´s easy to see why whales (and sea creatures in general) are prevalent in Iceland´s folklore and mythology. Some of the most diverse and dreaded kind of Icelandic sea monsters are the Illhveli/Wicked Whales, called so because of their extremely aggressive behaviour as they take every opportunity they can to sink ships and kill sailors. These whales are so horrible that their meat is inedible and it´s even a crime to eat it. Speaking out their names loud at sea or coast might attract their unwanted attention, but "good" whales like the blue whale can help humans deter or defeat these troublemakers.

This is a wiev of most but not all species of Illhveli, there are ten kinds of monstrous whales. I wanted to make my Illhveli look evolutionarily feasible so I took some inspiration from primitive/prehistoric whales (like Basilosaurus or Ambulocetus) to design some of the more chimeric Illhveli like the cat-, mouse-, and horse-whale. I might in the future draw all "evil" whale species and give each one a colored picture and a detailed description, but here´s what I got now.
