Description Here's the inks for the Orphen sketch . Yeah, it really needs some greyscale tones to pop him out from the backgrund and to pop his hand forward, but since this is for my Bishounen Coloring Book project, I need to leave large areas blank for people to put their own colors in.

I may color it one day, but I'm going to try to get some more B&W stuff cranked out for the coloring book first. Anyone feels like using it to practice their coloring, no prob. Just credit me and drop me a message to let me know, 'cause I'd like to go see it.

heehee, thanks! I'll probably color it at some point, either after I get this current batch of work done or when I start procrastinating on work I'm supposed to be doing.

Bishounen Coloring Book... now there's something worth buying!! And this picture is awesome, by the way. I get frustrated with a lot of my pictures, because I have this bad habit of always having my lines too light, so they never really turn out black, no matter how I try to tweak it in Photoshop... so now I'm all jealous... and Orphen is awesome, too ^___^ No doubts there!! You just keep on keeping on!!

Thanks! I'm doing the Bishounen Coloring Book to sell at A-Kon in June, and I think I'll probably be selling it from my website after that (mind you, it would help if I got off my ass and resurrected my website from the major server crash it had a few weeks ago).

I've gotten into the habit of scanning my stuff in on Lineart (Bitmap), which makes it nothing but pure black and white pixels -- of course, if I 'ink' with a pencil, the black line looks like Swiss cheese when you zoom in on it and makes coloring it a bit strange...

Hey, I'm going to A-Kon!! I'm definitely buying that thing!!! ^___^ How much will it be??

And lately, I've been thinking about trying to learn how to use Illustrator, and do my lines with the vectorness and the pen tool. It's supposed to take a long time, but you get really clean, solid lines, and can import it right into Photoshop after you finish. It gets for really professional-looking results, too. So I'm going to try to find a tutorial for Illustrator out there somewhere and see if I can get the hang of that...

Woo-hoo! A customer! I'm thinking of about $5. Maybe a little more (doubtful) or less (maybe) depending on how many pics I get done to go in it. I've got a table in the Komik Market. I have *no* idea how fast or slow it'll sell, so I recommend hunting my table down on Friday or early Saturday in case lighting strikes and it sells out fast.

I used Illustrator waaaaaaaay back in 1995 for a computer graphics class, but haven't since then. And I have so far utterly failed in developing the ability to use the pen tool in Photoshop.

Hehe, I haven't even bothered with the pen tool in Photoshop. It's beyond my skills.

But at A-Kon, I'll definitey find you, and buy the first one!! I'm going to have a table at the art gallery, so you can stop on by too ^__^

I'll see you there, then! I've got stuff in the art show, too -- which reminds me I need to send that check in...

I keep reminding myself that I need to ... and then I remember that every year the art show director says she won't hold if you don't send your money, and every year she holds the reserved panels until the con, and it becmes less urgent.

Watch me forget to send it in and then this be the first year she finally *doens't* hold them...

-Grabs him and nuzzles- he is so kawaii! ... wow I think that's the extend of my comment, yes he is cute... I love the way you say how you did everything, it really gives me ideas, especially how you described using the sharpie cause MAN I get sooo mad when there's all these extra lines that are really light because I just can't use the channel delete option cause I don't want to lose all my detail x.X

telophase In reply to intangible-dreams [2004-04-24 03:48:56 +0000 UTC]

I'm always fascinated by other artists' methods, so I figure I might as well return the favor. The sharpie was a happy accident -- I was penciling this while sitting at my computer listening to music, and there were so many lines on it that I thought I'd have to re-scan and refine it again, and then I saw the Sharpie right next to me...and history was made. I think I'll continue to do that. I don't do pieces that I need to alst a long time in Sharpie, because its ink fades over months or years, from what I understand, but for stuff that I'm doing to scan into the computer and work more on it, no problem.

Very nice. The inked version looks a lot stronger and with more movement compared to your pencil sketch one. I think adding color to it would give it a completely different look too. ^^

telophase In reply to Eikuu [2004-04-24 02:24:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Pretty amazing; my inks usually kill the movement. If I color it, he's going to ahve a glow in his hand because he's casting a spell, which would then reflect off his face and various parts ... no! must draw B&W! must not color!

I think its real good. The hand perspective looks tight. I might try to color it to practice cause I only colored 1 thing and it wasnt that good. So this might help.

Ah, such clean lines... *is jealous*
I'm assuming this is a traditional ink pen of some sort?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

telophase In reply to chibitensai [2004-04-24 01:28:37 +0000 UTC]

You think they're clean? My deception is complete! It's primarily a Tachikawa manga pen, which is basically a fountain pen with refillable ink cartridges, with the thicker lines reinforced with Micron pens in varying sizes. Then it's scanned in, cleaned up in Photoshop (takes a lot of time because my scanner is scrappy and scans a lot of junk pixels into the picture), and the black fills put in in PS.

I'm working at getting my lines thinner and thinner, except where they need to be thick, but it's hard going.

chibitensai In reply to telophase [2004-04-24 08:32:46 +0000 UTC]

Oohh.. manga pen. I'm pretty partial to sakura microns myself. Every once in a while I'd use a technical pen, but the ink can get pretty pricey. I wish I could get those perfect thin lines too... but I'm actually pretty happy w/how I sketch stuff out now. Although my poor tablet is getting the brunt of it...

telophase In reply to chibitensai [2004-04-25 03:05:31 +0000 UTC]

I've got a set of dip pens and ink, but havne't practiced enough with them to get any good. I think this was the first pic I've inked where the wibbly lines actually feel to me to contribute to the pic instead of taking away from them. (if at first you don't succeed, adjust your expectations!) I think I'll attempt to go with that idea for a while and see what happens.
