Description This was a pic of Kougaiji from Saiyuki I did at A-Kon for *The-Z , who was kind enough to scan it for me so I could post it here. As always, the scanner rendered it much less nice than the real piece is, because subtle pencil shadings don't transfer nicely unless you've got one of those scanners that cost $3432533423234 and are the size of a house.

Ooh... you were at A-Kon? Hmm... 't'would be funny if I saw you there... I was one of several (female) Gojyos running around the con... But anyways, the picture is quite well done, and the shading is great, even allowing for crappy scanners, so I can only imagine what the original must look like...

I was really hoping that you'd do one of Kougaiji eventually. I was one of the very few who voted in his favour in that poll you did a while back (was it here or livejournal? I don't recall). He's absolutely lovely. I adore the expression on his face.

there's such a thing as manga paper? o_O scannings can come out fine if you tweak their settings and whatnot...bit of a pain in the system really.

it looks pretty good despite apparently not scanning well

Yeah - manga paper comes in several weights, from your normal comic-type Bristol board weight, down to paper-weight. It's got a smooth surface good for inking, and comes in various sizes, some with pre-printed blue markings. As far as scans - it all depends on what your standards are. I've worked in a digital lab on campus during my last stint in grads chool, and I've seen what a $60K scanner is capable of, and $70 desktop scanners just don't cut it.

The mouth O_O The whole piece is very lovely, however the mouth looks so awesome. It looks so real for such a 2D anime character.

I love Kou, and you captured him so well here (even with the screwy scanner problems. His Reload outfit looks beautiful here (I'm pretty sure that's the Reload one... but I did just wake up ) Beautiful work, as always. Big thanks to The-Z for scanning it in for you.

Hurray for Kougaiji! I think it came out pretty good for being scanned. I know how you feel though, I have so many pics that look better shaded on a piece of paper rather than scanned (or digitally colored for that matter). So I can't ever sell them or post them...they just sit in my (now falling apart) sketchbook.
Anywho, this came out really well, though I'm sure the original is better. Hope to see more soon!

Thanks! The pictures I do in pencil that I want to make into prints I have to scan in at really high resolutions and then futz about with to make them halfway decent, and they still lose the lightest bits of the shading. Ah well.

Thanks. It's so much better in the original that it almost hurts me to look at it, but ya know? Nothing much you can do about that with scanners as they are.

*I admit I havne't seen the original for two weeks, and therefore memory may be casting a rosy glow over what it truly looks like, but I don't mind. XD
