Description Just started a short painting class. This was what I did today, for the first class. In order to work with tones, the teacher had us use black and white only and mix seven different greys. To give us ideas to start from, she had us pick a photo from a magazine and cut out a small bit from it, with nothing but shapes. No clue if you'll be able to figure out what I picked - it's obvious to me, but then again I picked the original picture.

Oil on canvas. Original 16 x 20"

why did you leave this image on its side. its incredably cool either way but i looked at it and i just knew that u had turned it. dunno how. but yeah looking at it direct looks like a organic like form. or some atmospheric form. yet on its side i see this hillside and pylons, with this massive white swirling abyss in the centre. awesome.

it is a group of six people walking up a snowy mountain. when you turn your head to the right you can see that they are walking in a line, and their shadows are casting down into the darker blue area. I'm not exactly sure about the dark blue area...it looks like either some sort of waterflow, or perhaps a sharp drop off to a deeper ice cavern.

I really like this. I had an assignment like this once, I painted a section of a doorway.
My guess as to what it is is an areal view of a river partly frozen (towards the right), with the white surounding it being snow and the dark spot in the left margin the opening to a cave. *hold breath and waits to hear if she's right*

hmm... People walking? Along a lake or something? Anyway, very nice. I really like the... uh... might-be-shadows of the might-be-people.

Ah - it illsutrates something I was telling you on that painting - see how when I put really dark areas in, I put the edges next to really light areas, and vice versa? That makes the darks and lights pop.

Thank you! I hadn't picked up a paintbrush in years, and decided to take the class because I decided that my problem when doing digital paintings was that I lacked a decent understanding of painterly technique.

Next week we're going to start on a project that'll take 2-3 sessions to complete - copying a classical painting. We'll start next week with doing an underpainting in burnt umber, then add black and white, then finally add color.

CLUES in the SENTENCE as to what to look up: "reading" "Amazon.com"

Put together with many other clues from the other comments in the thread: Cold. Large in scale. Tilt your head to the right. Now type "Into Thin Air" into the Amazon.com search engine and look at the first thing that comes up. What do all those clues put together suggest?
