Description In my last journal entry with the 9 Facts About Claris meme, I mentioned that she has three ghouls, all with flower names. Most of you have seen Rose already, but this is Claris's second girl. Who is... decidedly younger. This is Blancheflor. A backstory for her. (As always, feel free to skip if it's not your thang. )

After Leland left her, Claris inherited everything he left behind, which represents a very substantial amount of wealth accrued over many centuries. So technically, it's not as if he left her with absolutely no means to provide for herself... but over the time she spent with him, she'd made almost no contacts of her own either in the mortal or vampire worlds, and even with Rose, she couldn't bear the loss of her closest and oldest companion, so she decided to retreat from the world at large. Using her new resources, she was able to purchase an abandoned monastery at the village of Abingdon outside of London, and hole up there for several decades in a life of solitude and prayer, with Rose as her liaison to the living world. Over time, Rose began to bring stray travelers and distressed ladies, mortal and vampire alike, to take shelter at the abbey, and Claris offered a permanent home to the vampire women who sought refuge and rest from the mortal world, and temporary shelter to mortal travelers. Claris, now known as Sister Saint Clair to the other "nuns", became the prioress of the Sisterhood of the Holy Chalice.

The Sisters had been active for many years as of 1341, when a young French noble maiden's entourage traveled through Abingdon en route to London. They were delivering her to her future bridegroom, a lord many years her senior; in fact, the maiden in question, Blancheflor, was scarcely physically a woman. Even though she matured early, 12 was suspiciously young for marriage, even at that time. To top it off, the girl was ashamed of becoming an adult woman, and deeply disturbed by the idea of being married and doing her "wifely duty". During her stay at the abbey, she befriended Rose and confided these doubts to her, who of course mentioned it to Claris. Claris had already observed Blancheflor distantly, and was intrigued by her piety, her obsession with her own purity, and her obvious longing for a cloistered, quiet, religious life... and she, being what she is, could easily offer Blancheflor all of those things and save her from marriage and ever "growing up" at the same time.

She approached the girl and explained that if she chose, she could enter into the same arrangement Claris has with Rose, and tell her family and future husband that she had taken vows; and that if she wished, she could remain a child and an eternal virgin, and would never have to suffer childbearing or even her monthly courses again. In agreeing, Blancheflor sought refuge from the pressures and tumult of womanhood; and although she wouldn't stoop to turning the girl into a vampire proper, Claris nevertheless attained something Rose could never be and that even Leland could never have given her: a true, living child willing to be her "daughter", maybe even forever.

And even if her family or future husband gave them trouble, who's really going to argue with the prioress of an order of nuns who will literally eat you or tear your head off? Nobody, that's who.

This... can only end well.

I love how you draw medieval clothing. Not only is your linework sensitive and expressive, but you have a real feeling for the period.

Have you thought of doing some Robin Hood drawings? I'd love to see your take on Maid Marian, in real 12th century style, or the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Ah jeez, thanks so much. Honestly, it's all in the research. I've been getting a lot of really useful info from here: [link] The text is highly editorialized (I think it was written in the 1910s, if I'm remembering right) and the drawings aren't fantastic (although the watercolor paintings are VERY helpful), but the info about general silhouette and how all the parts fit together is EXTREMELY useful and inspired a lot of the more medieval-era dresses I've been drawing lately.

Robin Hood is one of those things I haven't thought about SPECIFICALLY, but now that you mention it, I think it'd be awesome to draw Maid Marian. The question is, will I be able to get past the image of a cartoon fox when/if I do? I have an absurd amount of affection for the Disney version with all the animals. Inaccurate? Of course. But still kind of adorable.

Ooh, thanks for the link! *bookmarks* I've tried to research medieval clothes in the past, but there's a paucity of good books out there. Some older Victorian costume books even claim that they had corsets back in the 1100s, which is pretty silly.

Cartoon foxes asides, I'd really like to see you draw some dark, moody Robin Hood pics. Have you ever read "Greenwood" by Sue Wilson? It's one of my favorite romance novels, and it features the Sheriff of Nottingham as the hero. It's lots of fun! I can send you a copy if you like.

URGH, I know, I can't even get over the amount of Victorian-era disinformation there is out there about seemingly the entirety of the Middle Ages. XD

I have NOT read that, and I'd totally love to! I don't think I've ever experienced a version where the Sheriff was a good guy. Or even a decent one. Sounds like it'd be worth it just for the novelty of the experience!

The Victorians were responsible for piles of historical disinformation still rampant today-- like that 18th century ladies wore big powdered wigs, or that New Englanders in the 1690s wore nothing but black, along with their steeple-crown hats and Little Lord Fauntleroy collars.

I just sent "Greenwood" to you. I hope you enjoy it! And may it inspire many dark and gothicky Robin Hood drawings.

This is true! At the same time I find the Victorian image of the 1690s New England Puritan a little absurd, and yet it has a certain effectiveness from an aesthetic standpoint. Playing fast and loose with history isn't ALWAYS bad... only if you keep trying to perpetuate it as truth.

Thank you much!! I'm looking forward to reading it. And getting inspired! WOOHOO!

suburbanbeatnik In reply to temiel [2011-02-24 17:57:52 +0000 UTC]

The traditional Victorian image of late 17th century Puritans is so irritating to me, since it's regurgitated over and over again in textbooks and novels... when the reality was so much richer and more interesting. Wealth, scandal, women in low-cut silk gowns, rich Bostonian merchants keeping their mistresses in Maine... it's the stuff of epic soap opera. I love it-- but all I see over and over again is The Crucible redux. And that makes me cross.

Yay inspiration! The story was inspired by Alan Rickman in Prince of Thieves... so it's fanfic in a way. But I lurve it! Let me know what you think.

Very beautiful young woman, and absolutly loving this part of the story. The fact that Claris goes on from her extreeme dumping by Leland to run this place where women and men can go to feel safe and escape from the parts of their lives they had no choice in.....it's lovely!!

Aw, thank you much! I'm glad you're liking where the plot is going... I honestly don't know how it'll end up. I think Claris has a LOT of maternal instincts, and this is a pretty natural way for her to exercise them... on the other hand, she has such a pathological need to be surrounded by people that she's likely to end up stifling her girls, especially the young ones. D:

aryiana In reply to temiel [2011-01-18 13:00:53 +0000 UTC]

I really was sad to hear about Leland leaving Claris but i really do like how Claris is taking it, not knowing what will happen has to be part of the joy of it?
I can understand the toss up between the maternal instincts and her needs...would make things interesting, but she has always been a complicated character, thats whats great about her!!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

temiel In reply to aryiana [2011-01-18 19:32:32 +0000 UTC]

Really? Because I don't think SHE likes how she's taking it. She's actually not taking it well at all, in spite of appearances. After he left, she tried to stay by an open window at daybreak and got REALLY mad when Rose saved her. -__- And after that, she was basically a hermit for several years before the loneliness started eating away at her. So she's now trying to fill that companionship void with other people who she can be something to, because otherwise she has no sense of self-worth. EMOOOOOO!!

Personally, I'm enjoying the journey quite a lot, though. I really do hope someday she finds happiness on her own terms. :3

aryiana In reply to temiel [2011-01-19 11:29:28 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, maybe i was a bit rash when i was saying that i liked the way she was handling it....maybe it's more i am liking the journey?!

I can understand why she would feel like that, alot of the neuroses she has are things i can relate to (which i am sure you have heard before so sorry for that) which is possibly why i really like her story and the fact that she has gotten through the hard part (one of them anyway) and is finding a way to deal with things in the short term...

Everyone has to have their emo times.....eek!!

Personally i have always thought that everyones individual journey is to find happiness on their own terms...

solfieri [2011-01-15 02:19:41 +0000 UTC]

I loved her backstory too! I have a strange fascination with religious characters that live a secluded monastic life, even though I'm not religious. AT ALL. (Despite hailing from a Catholic school) I guess it's because they're generally so rare in media, at least portrayed in a realistic manner, and central to the stories.

Anyway, I loved what Claris did for her, really spat at the face of those patriarchal bastards. :D Oddly enough, just as Ceres reminded you of an older Rose, she reminds me of a younger Alice. Except that she's much more conscious about what she wants and doesn't want from life, and obviously, Alice will follow the exactly opposite path. :'D

Her design is really charming, too! She looks a little older than twelve (though I imagine it's intentional), but I love the roundness and sweetness of her face.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

temiel In reply to solfieri [2011-01-15 02:32:07 +0000 UTC]

Yay! I can't pretend I'm surprised you're into those secluded, religious, monastic characters, I have to say. I'm actually not either, but I'm totally fascinated by the traditions and trappings and pageantry of religion, especially highly ceremonial sects like Catholicism. It's true that you don't really see much of those types of characters in most media, unless you're talking Shaolin-style fighting monks or stuff set in the middle ages, and even then they're usually shunted off to the sidelines.

Strangely enough, I'm not entirely convinced Claris did it for purely feminist reasons. There's definitely a bit of a "can I be your mommy?" vibe in there. However, I'm sure she'll eventually come to appreciate it from a feminist perspective as gradually the whole culture becomes a little more enlightened about women. It's sometimes hard to think about the perspective she would have on things simply because she just predates contemporary notions of gender and equality. I think, more than sticking it to the proverbial man, she's very into solidarity between women. Although on occasion there might be some sticking it to the man. She is Leland's childe, after all, and he's awfully into that kind of thing.

Yes, it was actually intentional that she'd look a little older than 12... and partially, it's the clothes. That gorget/wimple combo will age just about anyone by about ten years. Plus, times were tough back in the day. That's my excuse, I'm stickin' with it.

I guess to some extent I can understand Blancheflor for not wanting to get married at such young age, but also at those times women died less if they brought babies at that age...I think...I'm not sure...anyway I guess if things work out well, which I think they probably will ... Claris is going to ges a slight compensation, tho not from Leland.

But I must admit Blancheflor looks really beautiful in this garb, and her face is just angelic. Because of her blond hair she fits perfectly as a "daughter" to Claris.

I'd be happy to remove some of the charms of womanhood.ห‡ห‡

temiel In reply to almaticani [2011-01-09 02:18:57 +0000 UTC]

I think whether or not you died in childbirth depended more on your build than on your age. Blanche would probably not have ended up that well even if she'd WANTED it, since she's... rather tiny. D: (Rose, on the other hand, would probably have been quite a decent baby machine if circumstances had been different- VERY strong constitution and childbearing hips to boot. ) I have no idea how well things are going to work out, because honestly, after a long enough time being stuck in the body of a 12-year-old, I imagine things would get a little weird.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

almaticani In reply to temiel [2011-01-13 19:56:40 +0000 UTC]

Well the physical constitution only plays one part of the job. Other part generally is the health and strength. But I guess in Blanches case it's a bit different.

FINALLY GETTING TO COMMENT ON THIS.

I love her backstory, it's so well thought out with all those nng historical factoids <3 And it's incredibly revealing about Rose and Claris, too. Claris is kind of amazing, even if I'm sure she is completely and utterly humble and reserved about it. Good that she put jerky Leland's leaving to some sort of good use

I really like Blanche's name, too, and her outfit. The little details and colours you've added give the sense of her being important and well looked after. And her haaair is super pretty, what we can see from that adorable wimple XD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

temiel In reply to Dwenda [2011-01-04 13:12:32 +0000 UTC]

Oh jeez, she's... not that amazing. Like I've told you, she's mostly doing this to fill a gaping void in her soul. >_< HOWEVER, she wouldn't have bothered if the kid hadn't given her an opening. I'm not sure if she really leveled with her about the whole "See, if you do this long enough, you won't be able to have a normal life afterward even if you want to." By the time we pick up where we left off in-game, she will have been keeping this girl as a 12-year-old for over 70 years, and if she were to "let her grow up", she would become a decrepit old woman within a week. DAMMIT CLARIS, THIS IS THE SAME KIND OF MISTAKE THAT LELAND MADE. Then again, he did teach her pretty well, I suppose. But yes, I think it can be considered that she's OVERALL doing more good than harm. She just has a weakness for the idea of being something to somebody, whether that something is a wife or a mother or a servant or whatever.

Man, she's DEFINITELY well looked after, though, I gotta say, considering this is that whole Black Plague timeframe. I imagine, given the circumstances, being cloistered with a bunch of immortal, sickness-free ladies, being fed on their awesome powerblood, and avoiding the outside world is... really the place to be.

And I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for some sort of Werewolf Noble denied his arranged wife.

Hey, gotta keep egging on the old rivalries...

Yeah. Gotta built 'em up so you knock 'em down...

Ahem. Also, I find the idea of a child ghoul (or child vampire) interesting. Immortal children feel like walking metaphors for youth, although Claudia didn't work out very well toward the end...

Hmm. Again, interesting swing toward the age that brought us the Black Plague and the Hundred Years' War (and the Renaissance, but thats more of a Italian thing, ain't it?)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

temiel In reply to Sighter [2011-01-05 02:49:29 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, now there's an idea! I hadn't considered that at all. But then again, how likely is it that one would find a functional adult werewolf hanging out in the middle of arguably the most civilized area in the country?

They ARE interesting. I have to admit I always found Claudia rather fascinating, but it's partially my penchant for child monsters and the symbolism involved. And no, they often don't end well... which I'm okay with, really. Can't have a decent broody gothicish story without some decent tragedy. Or depravity. Or both, if that's what you're into!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Sighter In reply to temiel [2011-01-06 10:03:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm sure a Silver Fang werewolf could arrange something. As a noble, estates and palaces tend to have a nice amount of space around 'em. Werewolves have been doing stuff like that for awhile. Of course, the occasional soul-shattering Rage driving them to frenzy and kill everything around them...

Well, hey. They still want to live near people somehow. And the Silver Fangs, as I remember, have super precise noble blood they seek for breeding rights with.

Buckets of tragedy and depravity. Buckets and buckets.

HER BACKSTORY =

I'm loving how Claris's story is being developed after Leland left her! <3 I do hope that caring for Blancheflor and Rose will help easy her pain ;_;

Blancheflor's hairstyle is so cute! And in a sense, it's a shame she won't reach adulthood, I think she would become a beautiful lady :3

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

temiel In reply to sanxian [2011-01-04 02:01:05 +0000 UTC]

AHHHH YAY. I'm really glad you like it, I think about this nonsense WAY too much. Claris is DEFINITELY still being developed... her story is going to go on for a WHILE, I just have no idea when (if) he's going to re-enter the picture. Or how that'll go down when/if he does. or ... hmmm... I hope taking care of her girls will help her too, but unfortunately I think it may be one of those things that ends up hurting more than it helps. I keep thinking that what Claris needs to learn is that she doesn't have to be defined by who she is to other people. She doesn't have to be someone's wife or someone's mother to have worth... but right now, she's just not there yet, and she needs to be loved by somebody. And apparently, Rose just isn't enough. I think she might be a little addicted to other people's blood-bond devotion.

And yessss, it really is. Of course, there's still a possibility she COULD become an adult; the problem with being a ghoul is that while you're still getting regular doses of vampire blood, you don't age, but if that supply stops, all the years come back to you in a very short time. So in theory, if Claris were to keep dosing Blancheflor for, say, 7 or 10 years and then stop, she could "grow up" within a month or so. At this point, Rose has been with Claris for so long that her natural life would have ended long ago, and so if Claris stops feeding Rose on her blood, Rose will just die and, at this point, probably crumble to dust. O_o With Blancheflor, though... I don't know, I'm not sure if she could exercise enough restraint to allow her a natural adult life. And I'm not sure whether Blancheflor would even WANT it. THINGS TO THINK ABOUT.

I really like the thought of Claris gathering all these women around her too... and I can't help wondering how it would have looked like if it was in our present day world What would she use instead of a convent? Or would it still be a convent?
It would be pretty kick ass if they were all dressed in suits with ties and cute bows

Awww, Blancheflor is such a pretty darling. I love her hair. I'd say she looks like a cute little girl but she really acts much older than her age. But I guess, because it's still during the Medieval Era, that might be normal.
I really love all the interest you put in your characters' backstories. You never stop to surprise me with new things every time. I wish my OCs would be as interesting. I really envy you.

By the way, there is something I have always wondered about: Are these vampires able to encounter sunlight? If not, what happens to them when they do?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

temiel In reply to Caroline-DG [2011-01-03 23:04:20 +0000 UTC]

She probably DOES act much older than her age. If you think about it, Claris was only 17 when Leland turned her, and she was practically a spinster. Even when she was alive, she acted like a TOTAL adult most of the time, but once she had the luxury of leisure time, some of her more latent "adolescent" qualities kind of came to the surface. I'm sure it'll end up being the same for Blancheflor; now that she's not only allowed but encouraged to keep up her more childlike qualities, she'll probably become far more childlike even as she gets, like... older. Or something.

Ah, man, thank you so much. I honestly think I put WAY too much thought into this crap, I'm sure it's not healthy! And yet... bah, I love it too much not to do. :3

These guys can absolutely NOT go in the sun. The ghouls, like Rose and Blancheflor, are fully "mortal" in that they can pretty much do whatever normal people do in the sun; they just don't age and their strength is enhanced by the vampire blood. Leland and Claris, on the other hand... if they were to even be touched by sunlight, they'd start smoldering within moments, and possibly even burst into flames. Fun fact (well... not THAT fun, really)- after Leland left her, Claris attempted to commit vampire-suicide by locking herself in the attic room, taking down the shutters, and waiting for sunrise. When Rose realized what she was doing, she had to break the door down to save her, and it was ALMOST too late. Claris had some pretty nasty burns for a while. >__< Fortunately she's at least over THAT.

I'd say even younger people would start acting like ancient sages after having lived for more than hundred years but it's practically the opposite here.

You're welcome. Why shouldn't you? It's fun and maybe even instructive considering all of the information about the Middle Ages you get while creating these characters.
I already thought this would be your answer. Now that's how I like Vampires. No sparkles!!

Woot! She isn't a warrior queen exactly but TAKE THAT LELAND! She has her own loyal subjects and everything!

And also must say: Your kitty looks like the two black ones we have in the front yard! SO CUTE!

Fff, neither would I. >__< Screw that crap, man.

The weird thing about her whole order is that even though Sisters can choose to live out their period of respite in a religious or spiritual way, they don't have to. The Sisterhood is open to vampire ladies of every faith (or none, if they'd rather), and basically as long as they don't go out draining the town every night or start shit with the other not-exactly-nuns, they're welcome to stay as long as they like without ever taking "vows" per se. O_O And yes, she does kiiiiind of have "subjects"; her own ghoul-girls are DEFINITELY like subjects, and she kind of... collects them. Which really isn't all that healthy BUT WHATEVER

AND YES, omg, I love our li'l black kitty. :3 I found out at the shelter that black cats (and dogs too, actually!) are the least likely to be adopted, because people still think they're either "bad luck" or that they look "plain". Wtf?! Black cats are the cutest.

Ya for the story! I already told you i like the feminine care you put in some of the details.
And I also love the appearance of Blanchefleur. You are doing a wider human types variety with those characters than with Astral Arcana's, and i find really interesting the new facial features you invent for each new character! Clothes are always very cool, too, i love them!!!

*plays with Blanchfleflor's Melody hair* Well, no, actually, I wouldn't play with it. That would just mess up all that careful work. Poor little mite - I hope she finds her happiness. I like her veil - she wears it with style.

Lol, yes, she does have a bit of the Melody-'do going!

And man, yes, I hope she does too. I hope ALL these guys do, they're all so hilariously tragic. Except Rose, apparently, who's pretty chill about most stuff. Glad you like the veil! The look is actually growing on me.
