Description This is how I picture Locke Lamora, the hero from Scott Lynch's gorgeous "The Gentleman Bastard"-novel series.

Book one, "The Lies of Locke Lamora" made me addicted so I ordered book two, "Red Seas Unter Red Skies" months before its actual release in Germany.
I just could't wait any longer.

Although the picture's still full of mistakes (sorry, guys I've only been drawing for 3 years now), I am most content with it.
Acutally I think I never was that content with a picture of mine.

Locke Lamora rulez!
Everyone, please, read these books! Buy them! You'd support an *amazing* author.

Locke!!!

He looks amazing, with that card, and those eyes! I loved the books, and was quite sad that they aren't much fanarts of them on deviant... You made my day, thanks

LOOOCKE! 8DD Why haven't I looked up stuff for Gentleman Bastard before now? D8>

This is absolutely amazing! Great job! I got into the book when my friend told me about it and how he based Locke off of Locke Cole from Final Fantasy VI. That just nailed it for me--I HAD to read it! Now I can't read it without thinking of who each of the characters could represent from the Final Fantasy video games. XD;; I know, I'm such a dork. It's such an amazing book and you did the character such great justice. Thank you for this. It just made my day.

Yes, Locke Lamara does indeed rule. :] Currently reading "Red Seas Under Red Skies" so I decided to look for fan art. This is practically how I pictured him, only (and I blame this on one of the covers of 'lies') I also see him with a short ponytail.

By the way, I'm really impressed with the expression! Wish I could draw that well. Sadly, I just don't have the patience to force myself to sit down and draw, hehe.

Good job!

Hm, I thought about sending the book... but I'd need to send it across the ocean, and it would take sooo long. And be so expensive. I'm European, you know.

But I'm actually already drawing Locke again, thanks to you. ^_^

I reckon it's be really hard to draw Locke Lamora - getting the ABSOLUTE AWESOMENESS of him without making him too distictive - which is why i am NEVER going to be able to draw him, though I 'm taking a stab at Nazca - but you did a bang up job! congratulations!
And I have good news; you know how it's called the Gentlemen Bastards SEQUENCE? me and a friend were terrified it was going to be just two books, but I looked it up- SEVEN BOOKS PLANNED!!!

And thanks alot for the nice comment on my drawing.

aww he is exactly like i pictured him
everyone keeps doing him like really blonde but locke is too not blonde if u see what i mean
i'm so pleased theres other people that know locke lamora
i thought i was the only one
we spread the lamora all around, but everyone must remember locke is mine XD
plus i think the poison was a bluff and that locke lamora will be like omg i'm not dying and that will be the third book, i spent ages trying to think of a way he wouldn't die and i'm going to carry on believing this theory of mine.
and who the hell is Sabetha, his whole time is like i love Sabetha and we don't even know what she looks like!
i get so excited when i start talking about locke, i'm in hyper drive now.

Light-Child [2007-09-03 18:57:28 +0000 UTC]

This is totally as I see Lamora... newly discovered, but one of my most favourite characters of all books I've read so far. Awesome job...

As for the debate on whether he is attractive or not... Like I personally understood it, the manly ideal in that society was to be a big, strong brute. Muscles and chest hair and whatnot. Locke would be... short, slender and... not too manly, hence he would be seen as ugly from the other chars' POV.

... But that's just me. He looks most gorgeous on your drawing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tenleftthumbs In reply to Light-Child [2007-09-05 14:46:49 +0000 UTC]

Yes yes, exactly.
It's a very pithy (is that the right word?) era that the books take place in. Very brutal and bold, and I guess that was the ideal for men. Good point!
Next to the bull-like men Locke must look like a rat, pale, small, slim and witty.

What I like about Scotts Fantasy world is that women are more than merly damsels in distress, they are emancipated, bold and muscular themselves. More like amazons, and of course they would like their men to be something like that, too.

(sorry for my bad English...)

"Next to the bull-like men Locke must look like a rat, pale, small, slim and witty. "

Haha, poor Locke. XD Somehow I doubt he would appreciate that description.
I totally agree with you, it's amazing how the author always mentions women also being gladiators, thieves, mercenaries... even Dona Sofia was a little creepy, being a pro alchemist and all.

Personally I loved how Locke always tried to protect the others in his gang, and also how deeply Jean Tannen cared for him.

And the ending... I was crying when I finished it.

Ah, but it was a compliment. I love rats. Very intelligent animals, and cute!

Btw. Did you read the sequel: Red Seas Under Red Skies, as well?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Light-Child In reply to tenleftthumbs [2007-09-05 18:49:18 +0000 UTC]

I have developed a phobia against sequels, so I probably won't read it. In my eyes, The Lies of Locke Lamora was a perfect novel, with a perfect, wonderful ending. Somehow, I don't want it ruined by reading further, and maybe find out the story takes an unpleasant turn later. Neither do I want to find out more about Locke. Knowing too much about him would ruin his charm, of sorts...

Hope you understand.

tenleftthumbs In reply to Light-Child [2007-09-05 21:25:54 +0000 UTC]

Oh okay. But there are so many books coming up, sequels and prequels...
Being addicted to Scott Lynch's way of writing I could never resist buying all of them and learning anything about Locke. Even if I would be disappointed because I already have my own impression of him.
I am impressed that your will is that strong. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Light-Child In reply to tenleftthumbs [2007-09-07 14:38:45 +0000 UTC]

Haha, will is exactly what I lack. It's just that I have read several series, (used to be a faithful reader of Harry Potter for example) and at some point, they all took a horrible or disappointing turn. But I could use some more will... was at the bookstore today and saw the sequel... ended up reading the two last pages (It's a horrible habit I have) and nearly got a heart attack. He didn't eat something poisonous, did he!? Cause Locke just... can't die!

"My favourite characters have a tendency to die at some point. "

Yes... so do mine. *sigh*
I think the next book will be a prequel, telling s more about Locke's early days with the Gentleman Bastards, including ever-mysterious Sabetha. I highly doubt Locke will be dying in this one. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Light-Child In reply to tenleftthumbs [2007-09-07 19:50:03 +0000 UTC]

I fail to see how that could be a rethorical question... was more like an expression of shock. Is it even worth knowing what happens? My favourite characters have a tendency to die at some point. Though, it would be illogical, as there will be five other books...
