Description The 70's Part 2: "Disco and Punk"

The Five Genres of AOR wait backstage for their turn to play at The Snake Pit. Bubblegum Pop bombs, while Punk Rock and Disco electrify the place. Will the genres overcome?

ROCK REFERENCES

1. According to Wikipedia: "Bubblegum pop is a genre of pop music whose classic period ran from 1967 to 1972. The second wave of bubblegum started two years later and ran until 1977 when disco took over and punk rock emerged (some revisionist critics have claimed bubblegum influenced punk)." Because of Bubblegums' commercial based sound, he is hated by the genres out of jealousy. Despite Bubblegum being kicked off stage by Punk, the two genres are on good terms in the series.

2. Glam mentions that Punk likes to keep his songs under three minutes, it's more so a little over two minutes. Which is why his show ended so fast.

3. The reason why Punk provokes Prog after his show is because of their long standing rivalry. Prog bands kept their songs with complex time signatures for long durations, while punk rockers kept their songs short and simple.

4. New Wave is seen dancing to disco music. New Wave was partially influenced by Disco.

5. In the panel with New Wave, you can see the duck from the cover of the single for "Disco Duck". A satricial novelty disco song which became a hit in 1976.

6. Again, Prog is overlooked but at least acknowleged by Disco. Some prog bands liked to use disco style components in their music, like Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall: Part II".

7. It's hinted that the show was held on August 16, 1977. The day Elvis died.

Okay, you asked me to critique this and I have no idea, but I shall try my best!

Thanks for taking the time to critique this!  Even if critiquing comics wasn't what you're used to, I still appreciate it. I wrote this comic back in 2011 and it's hard for me to look back on some of the drawings and the dialogue. But if you thought it was cute, I'm glad someone did. I don't know if you're into rock music or not, so I could understand it being hard to critique something if you're not into it. Also just out of curiosity, did you read Part 1 of The 70's arc? You didn't have to, but that's the one that introduces the characters.

Anyways, thanks again for the critique. I liked the way you wrote it in bulletpoints so I could see the impression that you got from it.

If punk songs were under 3 mins, I wonder if that was a carry-over from the 60s. The only punk I can think of is of course, Greenday (not that I like them, really. A few singles are ok) and an (awesome!)80s/90s Greek band, Trypes (who are also experimental rock). For 60s mainstream rock, I myself use the Japanese catch-all term Group Sounds, and most GS I listen to is indeed Japanese, but GS encompasses from the Beach Boys to Jackson 5 (Jonny's Junior Special sound like J5 w/teen boys, just try "Cho'to Ma'te Kudasai" if you're curious) to the Beatles (over half of The Dynamite's singles were unfortunately Beatles covers). I haven't experienced much English language GS. Four Tops, Supremes, Beach Boys, Beatles (who I actually don't like)-that's about it. However, I couldn't help but n otise when you were talking about Punk the character, who I'm assuming reflects the genre and was wondering if short songs were a carryover from GS...

That could be why, because punk was ironically influenced by 60's mainstream music. However, I think the biggest reason why songs were relatively short was in response to progressive rock (Prog) groups like King Crimson and Yes who did songs 7-8 minutes long.

Thanks for the great feedback!

Aha. Makes sense. Yeah, I listen to a lot of Prog and they are fairly long songs....

One fellow who would have been a bubblegum artist had a disco hit. This would be Leif Garrett. He is now a regular on Tru TV's World's Dumbest, along with Partridge Family alum Danny Bonaduci.
The Ramones usually clocked in under 3 minutes until they stopped performing. I Want To Be Sedated is my favorite of theirs, as well as the Phil Spector produced Rock and Roll High School. They did not care for Mr Spector.
Prog is too sentimental and lyrical than Punk. One obvious example would be R.E.M.

I like that show and I Want to Be Sedated. That and California Sun are probably my two favorites of theirs.
