Description This is the most basic of guides I made several years ago in paint for my friends that don't know horses to understand the stories that I write. There are a couple better options on DA available.

<-- A slightly better overview of markings but pretty much as generic as mine.

<-- A really, really detailed and beautiful look at coat colors.

Now for my crappy explanation:

Horses - Ponies

Height measured in hands - h
1 h = 4 inches

Horses mature sexually at 4 years
Colt - Stallion/Gelding
Filly - Mare

1 year - Yearling
Just born to 3 years - Foal
Just taken from mother - Weanling

Lineage -
Sire - Father
Dam - Mother

Points - black legs, mane, and tail (normally on bays, roans, and some grays), sometimes dark gray

Regular Solid Colors -
Black - Entire body black with no brown or chestnut hairs
Bay - Dark brown hairs with points, some so dark they appear black and often mistaken for
Chesnut - Mixture of brown and yellow hairs
Gray - Mixture of white and black hairs, sometimes with black or darker gray points, lightens with age
Blue Roan - Mixture of gray and black hairs with points
Strawberry/Red Roans - Mixture of black and chestnut (varing shades) hairs with points
Palomino - Golden (chestnut and yellow hairs) coat with creamy mane and tail
Dun/Buckskin - Golden (chestnut and yellow hairs) coat with chestnut or black points, occassionally stripe of chestnut color on back

Specialty/Rare Colors -
Pinto - Black and white splashes
Paint - White and any color splash but black
White - pink skin with white body, normally blue eyes
Rose Gray - Mixture of black and white and reddish chestnut hairs giving gray with rose effect and dark gray points
Appaloosa - White coat with colored spots (A). Sometimes one solid color with white blanket on rump and spots on white (B)

Markings - Face
Star - Spot of white on forehead
Stripe - Thin white line on face
Blaze - Thick white line on face
White Face - Entire face white
Snip - Splash of white on muzzle
Markings - Body
Socks - White on legs no higher then the hocks
Stockings - White up to knee or higher

Personally, the chart is good.
Your really cruel attitude makes me dislike it.

Not EVERYONE knows about horse colors and markings. Not EVERYONE lives in 'Horse Country' and deals with horses every day.

You may know a lot, but the way you put it out there is very unprofessional and, for future reference, people dont like to feel like they're being bitched at for not knowing something.

just so you know , a pinto is not a black and white horse
a pinto has the same coloring as a paint, but paint is a breed while pinto is a color
for an example two horses could be bay overos
one would be a pinto because it is registerred mustang and the other would be a paint because it is registerred paint

These are cool! Didn't know there we're so many horse varieties. By the way, what's the name of the font you used for the writing next to the horses?

I totally can't remember. It was a font that I had loaded onto my parent's pc. It started with an A I know that. Astoria or something.

I've always heard that pinto was a color, which could be divided into piebald and skewbald, while paint was a breed. I don't know. I could be wrong.

hey, this is a erally good referance, but generally, white and ALL forms of grey are referred to as just grey, there isnt a white horse.

Actually, there is. They are very rare, often mistaken for gray, but they're there.

nice drawings, and just so's you and every body know, as well as set the record straight. Pintos are not Pintos because of their coloring(black and white, etc.) but because they are not registered, other wise they would be paints. thought I'd clear everyone up on that, anyways you did a good job on this pic, congrats

Yeah, I knew. Its all right but really, the program isn't terribly good, if I were to explore that route, I would be better off sticking to horse country
