Oiran were prostitutes, the highest rank among them being the Tayu, who were the only ones considered suitable for the Daimyo.

Maiko are like apprentice geisha and they wear their makeup different am I correct? Oiran/Tayuu is a courtesan occupation that has some outward similarities geishas get confused with too though. I heard some Japanese were pissed when Memoirs of a Geisha came out. I think the obi is tied in the front with Tayuu unlike geisha. Do you know if geisha wear the stacked sandals or is that just a tayuu thing?
