Description Ninjas. Not really used enough in fiction, let alone TG caps. I have sought to fix this grevious error. I'd love to do more ninja stuff, whether or not it involves our plucky little Akiko. As always, I do not take credit or ownership of the picture. I had maybe a little too much fun with this cap, and I'm sorry to say it's not a request. But you know what that means!

Instant-request Quiz time!: (Disclaimer, it will actually be my next next caption, as a commission just came up)
This one's easier than usual.

What is the origin of the classical all-black ninja garb? Please be specific?
The always knowledgeable Got the answer, I'll just restate it as he put it thoroughly and succinctly.

The classic black ninja outfit comes from the all-black uniforms worn by stage hands in Japanese theater, also known as kuroko.
Since the audience was basically "trained" to ignore the kuroko anytime they came on stage to adjust something, writers would have ninja characters wear kuroko uniforms up until it was time for them to reveal themselves, creating a sense of the ninja coming from nowhere.

Here's a little tidbit I found out from watching Gigin Goomba's show on youtube. Actual ninjas never wore black as it was easily visable in the moonlight, instead they wore (as the picture shows) dark shades of blue with special patterns that helped disguise them. they were also vegetarians

Yup. They never wore black. Most of the times ninja would wear peasant clothes and just walk up to kill their victims.

yeah. and they killed an enemy as a last resort (except for the intended victim, I think

Well, you can kind of tell that by their equipment. Most of I was very non-lethal.

yeah, shurikens and the throwing knives were just used for distractions mostly

Yup. That just makes ninjas cooler in my opinion.

Anyway, I'm sure you know why they're depicted as wearing black.

C10artfan In reply to TF-Wizard [2014-05-04 05:36:05 +0000 UTC]

yeah, it looks cooler

TF-Wizard In reply to C10artfan [2014-05-04 06:16:42 +0000 UTC]

No actually. The "traditional" black ninja garb comes from Kabuki theatre. Stagehands, who the audience were trained to ignore, wore the all-black garb to signify that they were invisible. When ninjas were to be needed in a plot, they were represented by the all-black classical ninja garb. This meant they were invisible, and you can imagine the audience's surprise when something they thought was part of the background suddenly stabbed someone and entered the plot.

that, and it looks cooler in peoples opinion

TF-Wizard In reply to C10artfan [2014-05-04 13:00:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's also a matter of what they're doing. In the all black, they seem to be more like shadowy warriors, sneaking around. With the more realistic outfits they're more like tricky masters of disguise.

TF-Wizard In reply to C10artfan [2014-05-04 16:21:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it helps you see them more as badass sword swinging warriors rather than a nobleman who dresses up like a peasant and poisons his enemies.
