Description

Maya marched confidently to the sergeant’s office. Boldly stepping into inside with a bold smile plastered on her lips.

Sitting down in front of the greying sergeant, she waits impatiently for where she was being sent for her first patrol.

The sergeant started with the pleasantries, telling Maya of how pleased he was with her progress and her determination. Maya gave the complements lip service, not wanting to come off as rude but only wanting to get started as soon as possible.

Fortunately for her, the sergeant picked up quickly on her eagerness quickly and moved onto her assignment. Maya would be sent to the Merchant’s Ward. An area of the city filled with stores and smaller businesses.

Maya’s excitement dimed a little upon hearing who was going to be her partner for the day. She had hoped to be partnered with an officer close to her age. Instead, she was pared with one of the older ones. An officer who had seen her fair share of action but who’s age was clearly catching up with her.

With little time to dwell on her excitement or disappointment, Maya and her mentor headed out to the Merchant’s Ward. The walk while in theory should’ve been a short one, took much longer due to the elder officer’s lack of physical fitness. Maya waited patiently, not uttering a word but secretly wondering why she hadn’t announced her retirement yet.

By the time the pair had arrived at the Merchant’s Ward, Maya was buzzing to get started, only to be met with a tirade from her mentor, going over the proper etiquette, how to interact with the public and other unnecessary information that was either already known to Maya or was completely unnecessary for her duties.

Maya was worried that her first day on patrol would be little more than a lecture. However, fate had another plan for her. As her mind slipped into a hypnotic trance brought on through boredom, the officers’ radios broke the monotony.

“We have reports on a robbery in the south of Merchant’s Ward. Suspects seemingly a group of young women, all scattered into opposite directions. All officers be advised”.

Quickly realising that they were close to the area Maya raced towards the crime scene, leaving her elder slowly waddling several blocks behind her.

Racing down the street towards the crime scene, Maya out of the corner of her eye spotted a young woman, darting down a side passage. Suspecting that this woman was involved in the robbery, Maya gave chase. In a panic from seeing an officer catch up with her so quickly, the woman made a wrong turn into a dead end.

Catching up with the woman quickly, Maya drew her pistol and aimed it towards the woman. “Miss!! I’m only going to ask this once, get down on the ground and surrender now!!” She yelled.

The woman, seeing no way out, slowly lowered herself down, allowing Maya to approach her safely.

“Do you have any weapons on you?” Maya asked, suspecting that the suspect had a weapon hiding underneath her leather jacket. The suspect said nothing, only sighing and allowing the officer to continue her search.

Though Maya didn’t find a gun on her, she did find a small knife tucked into the waistline of the woman’s pants. Along with a couple wads of cash.

Finding enough, Maya placed the woman under arrest. Her heart ran with excitement as she securely locked a pair of cold metal cuffs around the woman’s slender wrists.

“Come on miss… there’s no need to be so strict. I’m coming along quietly” The woman said, who had seemingly calmed down as her tone was almost playful.

Before Maya could respond however, her mentor arrived. Sweating, red faced and looking almost ready to pass out. “O-officer Williams… W-why didn’t y… you wait?” She asked, forcing the words out of her dry throat.

Maya smiled and took the suspect by the arm “I caught one of the suspects Ma’am”.

The two then escorted the woman to the station, while Maya was simply basking in the excitement of her first arrest, her mentor found it odd how quickly the suspect surrendered, how cooperative she was being and how seemingly carefree she was.
