Maya made quick pace as she walked, not spending a moment to relish the warm summers glow. She typically wasn’t one to do this in the first place but had more reasons not to as the minutes slipped away.

Upon stepping inside the station, she was met with a familiar sight, the receptionist looking at the clock with an unamused face.

“Well Officer Williams, nice to see you joining us on time today”. The receptionist spoke with a dry tone, clearly not a fan of hers though the feeling was mutual.

“Yeah… woke up nice and early today” Maya made her way past, barely looking at the receptionist as she passed her.

Making her way towards her desk she passed by other officers, most busy writing reports while a couple of the others rushed around handing out the day’s newspapers and notices from the sergeants. Most of the desks lay empty, most either out on patrol or on the night shift. It seemed like just another ordinary day for Maya.

Maya could still remember the first day on the force. Unfortunately, it just so happened to be on the same day as a major robbery of the City Bank of Starport, as a result she and a few other cadets were overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the station, some quit after a week. Maya could remember their faces but not their names, rookies come and go quite frequently as the demands for running a city-wide police force saw many a stary eyed recruit become overwhelmed.

While she had achieved the rank of officer, she was still relatively new. Due to this her typical day mostly involved a mountain of paperwork. Noise complaints, nonsensical claims, damage to police and city resources, all needed to be filled out by her and the other green officers.

Maya longed for some field work, being couped up with nothing to do but fill out forms was soul crushing for her. She knew deep inside that her place was out there, among the streets and alleyways, searching for criminals and evidence.

She sighed deeply as she approached the notice board, looking for what news had broken since her previous shift and checking who was on patrol duty, hoping that this time… her name would be there.

Her eyes glanced over the local news, nothing special caught her eyes so she moved to the list. At first nothing out of the ordinary. Her excitement started to wither, until at the second to last name… there it was, Maya Williams. Maya may have remained stoic on the outside, but her heart leapt with excitement as she made her way to the sergeant’s office. Ecstatic over her first time on patrol duty.
