Description

A some of the intelligent animals of my wanderer year 10000 setting.

Rodents:

Mice were a controversial choice for genetic uplifting but also one of the ones that made the most sense. They were controversial for the same reasons of uplifting pigs, how would mice react to knowing we experimented on their ancestors to further our understanding of science or killing them as pests. The answer is complicated, rat and mouse uplifts understand they are not the same species as their ancestors but still feel a great cultural trauma of being once seen as expendable pests.

Because mice and rats have so many children there are many places that still treat them like vermin. For this reason rodent uplifts tend to have a very strong sense of unity and cultural pride.

Cuttlefish:

Cuttlefish were not uplifted by humans but by octopuses. They were uplifted for use as diplomats and servants but were granted more freedom over time. Cuttlefish like Octopuses use colour changing to communicate in a visual language known as "Cephachrome".

Crows:

Crows are rather emotionally detached when compared to humans. Crows are able to remain utterly stoic in even the most troubling situations and their emotions rarely get the better of them. For this reason raven uplifts are often mistrusted for their calculated demeanour. The more a human gets to know a crow uplift however, they will find that crows can be a very warm and sociable species. Even if they tend to have a morbid sense of humour and strong affinity for gossip.

African Grey Parrots:

Parrots were a prime choice for uplifting given they could speak human language and were already somewhat intelligent to begin with. Many parrots don't have a voice of their own and speak human languages by repeating words they heard from others leading to an unusual cadence unique to sapient avians. Grey parrots have a strong affinity of cultural references and memes and will endlessly parrot (pun intended) their favourite action movie one liners and non-sequitur inside jokes, much to the annoyance of others. The ability to reproduce exact sounds and their fondness for memes leads most African grey parrots to speak almost entirely in references. One must be very β€œin the know” of what memes are considered fashionable by grey parrot culture or they will be entirely confused with their bizarre ever shifting language.

Cats:

Humans are believed to have uplifted cats numerous times independently. Humans gave cats limited sentience purely because they enjoyed their company and wished they were smarter, much like why humans made dog uplifts. Cat uplifts tend to be a little smarter than an average human child, they are typically introverted and independent.
