There are too many things I love about this it isn't healthy for my mind.
I love Listolier, Fameuil, Blacheville and Tholomyes in the border - no one draws them but you did and it's awesome!
Fantine is great. She's more sort of...hmm... "classically beautiful". Everyone out there seems to just portray her as a supermodel before the whole M-sur-M scenario.
And I really love the look on the face of the woman in the green dress - Favourite? -, she's *looks* lovely.

Thank you so much for your kind words! XD I'm so glad you like it. And yes, that is Favourite.

The level of detail in this piece (and all your work) is absolutely stunning. You also do colors beautifully.

Wow! This is really, really, really gorgeous! I love the level of detail in the border, and the poses of all four women are just perfect. Poor Fantine seems like she's half-collapsing from the shock, while the others joke; but I love the touch of one woman's expression being hidden, like perhaps she isn't as amused as she's making out to be. Fantine's hair is really lovely. I like how you drew the four men, so that even if someone hadn't read the book, they might be able to piece together a bit of the narrative from looking at your illustration. Also, I like that you made the men look rather unattractive and mean, considering the content of the picture. As an artistic question, *how* do you make your borders? I'm working on a project where I want to make illuminated-manuscript-esque borders, and I'm curious. Do you base them on existing designs/patterns? Do you measure anything before you start?

Thank you so much!
To make the borders I generally try to make it related to the subject, sometimes by putting the medallions for related images, sometimes with contrasting colour, and sometimes with inserted "symbolic" motifs. The thickness of the border is determined based on just how intricate you want it, also whether you want it to be a really simple frame or if you want some sort of asymmetry- this can be fun, especially if you look at stained glass windows (I'm working on one like that now). I don't usually base them on any particular patterns, but it is helpful to look at as many manuscript images as you can find, and also stained glass (the borders of Chartres are really spectacular- you can find some really good high resolution images online), cloth patterns, rococo wallpaper, etc for ideas. Don't fuss over the little curlicues and such- the fact that you can do anything with them means the border doesn't require extensive planning beyond the basic layout/colour scheme. (Sorry if that was a bit long.)

Thank you so much! No, that wasn't long at all -- I asked! You gave a very helpful and detailed answer, and I appreciate it lots and lots!

Awww. I don't think I've ever seen this scene illustrated...and it's beautifully done! I do adore that border. Poor Fantine, she looks distraught.

Yes, there really isn't much fanart for Book 1, is there? It's a shame since there are so many beautiful passages in that part, whether with Fantine or the Bishop, or even the very first introduction to the ThΓ©nardiers.
But thank you!

There really needs to be more. The poor Bishop, he's so overlooked!
I feel a bit hypocritical saying that, though, since I've never done any Book One fanart myself...

Aw, don't feel bad about that. While Book 1 has very beautiful scenes, Books 2-5 just have some characters and situations that are just so very much fun to play with, maybe because a lot of Book 1 is very definite, and the others allow for greater freedom of, er, interpretation...

Yes, and more characters overall, it seems. A larger cast, and to top it off you can play around with them more, as you've said.
Hehe, freedom of interpretation. How odd it can be. :3

The look of this piece is beautiful. Such a heart-wrenching scene (I could have killed the four students while reading it).
What media did you use?

Thank you.
Those students were truly dreadful- and at the same time it's also somewhat disturbing to see how the other three girls really just aren't so affected by their cruelty.
I used markers for this, although not any specific brand.
