Description Cameron groaned. This trip was not shaping up how he wanted. His feet were sore, his legs and back ached; he had been hiking for hours and hadn’t seen any hints of life other than the few folks he was traveling with. He had won a trip to Central Asia to research the corsac fox, but so far he didn’t have any luck. Finally after what seemed likes days, his luck began to change. Cameron spotted something out of the corner of his eye. He glanced over to the hill nearby and there it was: a corsac fox. A surge of happiness rushed through him. As quickly as he could without spooking the small fox, he grabbed his backpack and tried grabbing his camera. He snatched his point-and-shoot out of his bag and looked back to the hill aaaaand—the fox was gone.

That surge of happiness was immediately replaced with a pang of disappointment. Cameron scanned the hillside; trying to see if he could spot where it went. Nothing. His first glimpse of a fox the whole trip and he had nothing to show for it. With a loud sigh, Cameron put his camera in his bag and started up the hill. Maybe he’ll find the fox on the other side? With every few steps, his legs reminded him that he had been walking for ages. His legs were aching, his feet throbbing. Even though his feet began to hurt, he pressed on. Finding that elusive fox was worth it!

Higher and higher, Cameron climbed up the hill; his legs feeling a bit…itchy. The temperature seemed to spike as he ascended the rocky hill. His entire body began to feel uncomfortably warm. Groaning, Cameron shifted his shirt collar and itched at his side. His toes began to feel numb in his shoes; each step began to feel strange. Reaching the crest of the hill, Cameron dropped his bag and sat down. His feet were completely numb by now. Kicking off his shoes, Cameron’s heart skipped a beat. His feet had changed.

Cameron couldn’t believe what he was seeing. His ankles were raised out of his socks; orange, gray, and white hairs covered his ankles down to his toes. His heart began to race as he frantically took off his socks; the fabric tearing on his new claws as he tossed the pair aside. His feet didn’t look like human feet anymore. They looked like paws. Fox paws. He couldn’t believe it. This…this had to be a trick. An illusion. Was he hallucinating? Was he dehydrated. Trembling, he slowly reached a hand to his feet and felt the fur. A shiver ran down his spine as the hairs on his neck stood up. It was real. He had paws.

This- This sort of things doesn’t just…happen, right? There HAD to be an explanation! As Cameron’s mind raced to try and make sense of the changes to his feet, changes elsewhere had already begun. A warmth began to build inside his ears; slowly radiating outward as the tips of his ears pointed. A thin layer of fur began to coat them as they migrated up his skull. Cameron’s nose began to darken; changing texture slightly as it began to look just a bit more canine. Meanwhile, his hands had started changes of their own. It was subtle at first: a few hairs here and there; nails beginning to grow out as they darkened.

A wave of dizziness hit Cameron like a ton of bricks. The world began to spin as his hands drifted to his head. Clenching his eyes, he let out a vulpine whine. Cameron’s body began to shrink. His entire frame began to reduce in size as the fur from his paws began to spread across his entire lower body. As he shrank, more and more fur raced across his skin. His face was already looking a bit furry when he felt the fur inch down his neck and over his chest. Cameron gritted his teeth as his jaw began to extend outward; his lips thinning out and turning black as fur covered his snout. Whiskers now adorned his foxy face as his hair began to retreat into his growing fur line. His larger ears wiggled and twitched in the breeze as leaned onto his left hand.

His baggy clothes continued to cover Cameron as his spine began to extend out behind him. Bushy gray and light-orange fur began to spread over his new foxy appendage as he felt the brush come to life behind him. Cameron let out a surprised yip as his growing tail wiggled and wagged. Cameron rolled himself onto all fours, looking at his bag and scanning the horizon for anyone from the group. This wasn’t right, he wasn’t supposed to be a fox. He whimpered and groaned again as his skull began to reshape; taking on a more natural profile for a fox. He had to get help, he had—Cameron froze. For some reason he couldn’t think of why exactly he needed to get help. He..He….

Cameron’s body continued to lose its human size and shape. His legs creaked and cracked as they reshaped into the proper hind legs of a fox. His arm was significantly shorter than his left; his elbow growing a fluffy patch of fur as his fur-covered hand shifted into a proper paw. His left arm started catching up to the rest of him; his stance getting lower and lower to the ground as his huge pants simply dropped off his furry hips to his paws. Cameron looked around a bit confused as the world grew around him. His arm trembled as his hand puffed up; rough pads forming on his palm as fur coated every inch of exposed skin. The worry and sense of panic from earlier was beginning to fade. Cameron couldn’t remember why he was so scared. Were there predators nearby? Did his prey get away? The last of his human features vanished from his foxy visage. The fox yipped and whined; why was he covered in these..these…things? The small canid struggled to free himself of the strange garments. After a few unsuccessful tries, he finally got free. The little corsac fox looked over the random assortment of clothes and human possessions scattered about before catching a scent in the wind. Without another thought, the fox turned and scampered off into the steppes.
