Description The kitchen wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t great either. Lucas flinched as he walked in and filled a cup of water. After an exhausting round of League of Legends with friends, he really needed something to drink. As he quenched his third, he was reminded he REALLY needed to clean up. The dishes were stacked in the sink, a few cups and some other trash was lying about, and there was still a few ants roaming around looking for some food. As Lucas surveyed the mess, he noticed something dash just out of view. Lucas’ startled heart skipped a beat as he saw a little black mass disappear under the counter. He was only able to see a small, pink tail disappear into the darkness. Glancing back at where it came from, Lucas spotted some little black droppings and a torn trash bag. Lucas groaned at the sight. Rats. He had rats.

After spending some time cleaning up the mess his little rodent friends left him, a disgruntled Lucas decided he needed a trip to the store. Lucas tossed on his shoes and quickly left. He was determined to make it back with something to get rid of those rats before they made another mess. Half way to the store, Lucas was walking quickly when he spotted something he didn’t notice on this route before: a small general store. Little to no signage, the store sat a bit empty. It didn’t even look open if not for a little blue “OPEN” sign in the front window. He glanced down the road. He was still not even halfway to the store. This smaller store was sure to have something to get rid of those pests.

A small bell rang as Lucas entered the store. It was dark inside, the lighting made the store feel very eerie. Nobody was behind the counter. Lucas made his way down an aisle, looking for some sort of rodent repellent. As he browsed, he noticed something was…off about all the products lining the shelves. No large companies, no recognizable labels. There wasn’t a whole lot of each product either; only one or two of each. ‘Must only carry local stuff...’ Lucas thought to himself as he rounded a corner.

Lucas jumped back and flinched as an older woman just appeared around the corner. Lucas’ heart raced a bit as he regained his composure.

“H-Hi there! S-Sorry, didn’t see you there!” Lucas sighed a bit, a weak smile appearing on his face.

The woman didn’t even so much as blink at Lucas’ surprise. She just calmly smiled and placed her hands together.

“No need to apologize, lad. What is it that you seek?”

Lucas stood there, a bit confused at her lack of emotion.

“Uhhh…I..I have a rat problem. I want something to get rid of ‘em…Like some repellent or something…”

The woman nodded quietly and turned, picking up a candle off the shelf. She held the candle outward.

“This should do the trick for you. Just light and your problem with rats will be solved.”

Lucas glanced at the candle then back at the old woman. How was a candle supposed to help him? Maybe they hated the scent or something? He slowly reached up to grab it when she pulled it back from him.

“I warn you, lad. This solution is a permanent one. Rats won’t bother you any more with this, but not without cost. Do you understand?”

Lucas tilted his head to the side a bit.

“Y-Yeeeah, that’s fine. That works for me.”

The woman then nodded and held the candle out for Lucas again. He took the candle from her and reached into his pocket for his wallet. She held her hand out.

“No payment necessary, lad. Only if it works.”

“Uhh..a-alright, thanks!”

With candle in hand, Lucas left the store and quickly jogged back home. He tossed his keys on the table and kicked off his shoes. He got down on his knees and looked at the floor. No mess! Grinning, Lucas set the candle on the kitchen table and grabbed a lighter from the drawer. Click, click, FIRE!

Lucas held the flame near the wick. After a few moments, the candle lit. At first, he couldn’t smell a thing. He waited for some scent to drift to his nostrils, but nothing came. A chill ran down Lucas’ spine followed by a warmth. Just out of view, short white hairs began to grow out of his arms and legs. The hair on the back of Lucas’ neck stood up. He shook his head. The candle wasn’t working, not that he really expecte— Lucas stopped and sniffed a few times. He could smell something! It was faint, but it was there! He couldn’t place his hand on it though…

Lucas closed his eyes and kept sniffing the air. His nose twitched as he did; the shape changing ever so slightly as his ears began to slowly shift as well. The more he sniffed, the more his nose changed; a short set of whiskers now adorned his face as his ears inched slowly up his head. His light-colored hair began to turn into a mix of gray and white as an itching sensation washed over his arms and legs. Lucas absentmindedly itched at his arm when he felt something soft. His eyes opened immediately. He shaves his arms, he remembered doing that in the morning, how could—

Lucas’ heart skipped a beat. White hairs were covering his forearm. No, not hairs, fur. White fur. Lucas let out a scared squeak as he hopped backwards. His clothes that fit perfectly a few moments before now felt a little large on him, as if they grew an entire size in the past few minutes. Not only that, the room around almost seemed…bigger! Lucas breathed in deeply. Alright, it had to be some sort of illusion, right? A trick! S-Surely this can’t be happening…right?

Lucas’ heart continued to race in a slight panic in his chest as the fur continued to spread up his arm. The light-peach colored skin on his hands began to turn more pinkish hue. His fingers began to change; nails growing sharper and more claw-like as his hands began to become more paw-like in shape. The white fur raced over his shoulders and back. Lucas gritted his teeth and groaned. His entire body was compressing; he felt gravity push him toward the ground as he began to shrink. His hair, once a nice gold blonde, was now almost the same color and texture as the fur growing on his face. A tugging at his spine caused him to look back only to let out a whimper. A pink nub was forming at the base of his spine. The scaly appendage began to grow and expand, little by little, into a short tail. He recognized it immediately. It was a rat’s tail. He was turning into a rat.

Scared, Lucas’ eyes darted around the room. He had to find something, anything, to stop this! He sniffed a few times, gritting his teeth again and groaning loudly as his skull began to reshape. His larger, rodent-like ears moved up his skull as his face extended outward. By the second he was beginning to resemble a rat more than a human. His new, sensitive rat-nose twitched. The candle’s scent was much stronger than before and growing stronger every moment that passed. That’s what must be doing it! Lucas eyed the flickering flame. He had to put it out, stop this before it was too late!

Before Lucas could even take a step forward, he was hit by a wave of dizziness. The world was thrown out of whack; his vision blurred, his balance was off, sounds became dull. The only thing that remained strong was the smell. The blasted candle! Lucas glanced up at the table; he was shrinking too fast, he couldn’t reach it without help. His shorts began to slide further down his furry thighs. His long tail twitched and moved behind him. Lucas lifted his large shirt and glanced past his snout. White fur covered his stomach and his lower body. His toes had grown out and changed; his feet now more like rat paws than a human’s. Lucas let go of his shirt and squeaked. The changes advanced quickly. His legs shrank into the hind quarters of a rat. His large shorts feel to his hind paws. The massive blanket of a shirt was too much for him by this point; causing Lucas to fall to his forepaws with a squeak and a thud. His eyes began to drift apart a bit as they became black and beady. He tried calling for help, calling out for anyone to come to his aid, but all that escaped his animal muzzle was a few squeaks.

The young man, now fully a rat in body, trembled as the last of the changes racked his tiny body. Slowly his eyesight and hearing returned. The strong scent of the candle still hung in the air, the pleasant and intense aroma started to smooth the nerves of the little white rodent. Lucas’ heart began to slow; his mind drifted from panic and fear of his spontaneous transformation to calmer thoughts about food and nest building.

For a few moments, the rat sat there, partially covered in his former clothes, basking in the dim light and the candle’s sweet scent. His new nose twitched at another scent coming from under the cabinets. Other rats. Friends! The little white rat scurried out of the large pile of clothes and sat up on his haunches. He glanced around the room one last time before scurrying off into the darkness. Lucas’ rat problem was solved in the end, just, not in the way he probably had hoped.
