Great map! Especially for no textures. Very nice hand-drawn style.
You're right. Trees are an issue.
I fill them with black, other than the roots. Then, as you did, I add a shadow layer of leaves on top.
If not filled with black, to me, trees look like stumps.

I've worked out a way to do trees that I'm happy with. My new maps are much easier to read foliage-wise.

That's pretty much how I ended up doing it. If you add a few of the lower branches below the cutoff they might read a bit better though.
(here, not that I'm entirely happy with how these read: fav.me/d964svg )

Adding branches below the cutoff is a great idea. I'll try that on one of my next maps. I'm also trying portraying more trunks and root and it seems to be making a difference.
TREES ARE HARD!

Cool, nice map. Which edition of DND are you playing? I've been playing 5e and like it a lot.

Thanks! We're playing 5th ed as well and I think it's a great system. They're also bringing back the open gaming licence which is awesome!

Glad they read well. I'm CERTAIN there's a better way to do it though. I MUST TINKER!
