Description Dakt was talking about seeing Earth G in the DCAU style and that got me super excited to try and make it happen. I tried to do animated versions of some characters before but that was more MY version of an animated style. This time I thought I would take an established style and try to fit an Earth G character in.

So this is a Bruce Timm version of Nightbird, circa Justice League Unlimited. I used a pic of Aquaman as a base and built him over the top. It was mostly just to see if it could be done. It sounds easy enough, taking a style and making something new with it, but it wasn't. Trying to figure out how details work in a style, with no reference, can be frustrating. But I think it turned out okay. Okay enough to want to try and do some more. I think next I'll have to try and do a female character. See if I can construct something in that Timm style.

i just wanted you to know that i've started a file on my computer for all the DCAU pics, resizing them so they're all more-or-less proportional using face size and timm rules as references, and nightbird is HELLA tall which is natural for timm animation, but it's still funny to me. it's probably just really noticeable because nearly everyone else is a chick and none used WW as a base, so they're all super short

Damn. I didn't even think of doing something like that! Seeing them all together would be awesome. Now that I know Nightbird is really tall in comparison I'm kinda thinking whether I should change that. Maybe after I've drawn a few more guys he might not stand out too much. Even though he can't help but stand out.

I'm thinking of doing a different version of Nightbird anyway. A few people said he was bulkier than they imagined he would be...and that got the idea in my head that he needs to be not so thick. Though he can't help that either.

Turned out great, I'd say! Although I don't normally picture Nightbird to be so broad shouldered. But that's Timm's style, so it works!

You know...I was drawing this going "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah. Look at Nightbird, being all manly with his broad shoulders and barrel chest" then when everyone saw it they went "Nightbird's not that thick and wide."

i used to do that all the time with characters in the teen titans style.

wicked awesome job btw. i really liked the justice league style and the batman cartoons. you got me wanting to do this now, lol.

The Teen Titans style would be cool to try. I'm not familiar with it so I'd need to look at some pics. But it would be cool to try. The Brave and The Bold style too.

I always imagined Nightbird as a skinny hero, with taut, lithe muscle. What do you mean, "have you imagined a lot?" now you're just being rude and I refuse to answer. So seeing him all broad like this threw me off.

BUT SERIOUSLY. WTF. YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO DO SOMETHING SO MONUMENTALLY AMAZING AND NOW I HAVE TO DO ONE JUST LIKE IT FOR NIGHTSHADE.

Man...I'd hate to have seen the amount of blood loss and hemorrhaging if I'd done Nightshade first.

I tried to find a good picture of animated Nightwing to use but I couldn't find one! I COULDN'T! But I think he'd probably be better a little less chunky. So I might try and make a better version of him. I would make no inquiries into how long you spend thinking about characters. I know with the way your brain works you can't help but visualise everyone in depth.

Well I went through several search phrases and narrowed it down by size and it wasn't easy, I swear. But I had to! After I searched for ages for that pic of Brooklyn wearing a helmet and couldn't find it and BAM! you gave me a link.

That IS cute. Although I wonder why her legs are all muscled when she can't walk anymore.

I've often wondered that too. I think comic book artists are too used to drawing muscles on everything. They don't know how to stop themselves.

dA exile ay? This wouldn't have something to do with Tumblr would it? If not and it's to do with a workload that can't be interrupted by trips to dA then I can understand that. But if it's Tumblr...

Well all your talk of animated Earth G got me super excited to try and do some designs at least. I think if I can do a few of these designs and learn how the characters look I might be ready to try and make them move.

nope, not tumblr's fault i've just been at home with my family, and they take offense to me spending too much time on the computer. also i've hit a massive dry spell for drawing so i don't want to get caught up in new ideas before i figure out how to deal with the ones i already have :/

You mimicked the style perfectly, but I might have used someone slimmer for Nightbird's base. I guess it would up to you how your character looks. I would love to see you do somebody else!

I was thinking the exact same thing. The animated Nightwing is pretty slim so they whole time I was working on this I kept asking "Shouldn't he be more less chunky?" But I guess I can always correct that. I was just seeing if I could actually copy this style first. Now I know I can I think I'll do some more and try and make a better Nightbird.
