Description

“We are not the backbone of the empire. We are it’s fists, constantly pounding on the filth, heathens and parasites that threaten the security and foundation of our civilisation.”

The Imperial Death Legionnaires are the foot soldiers of the Imperium. They have complete devotion to their Emperor as servants of the Empire, facing and battling any danger to keep their people safe. Like all members of the Imperial Military, Death Legionaries are the physical presence of Death’s guardian souls. These souls are created from those who die in battle, splintering off the original spirit and entering the service of Death’s army. When Death came to the physical world with intents of conquering the human race, the guardian souls joined him as a crucial part of shepherding mankind.

The Legionaries’ physical presence on earth evolves around the form of a skeleton. This skeleton takes upon the appearance of a living being in order to blend in with man kind. They never tire, eat, breath and have an unbreakable loyalty to their Emperor as a result of this. Though they posses a connection with Death and each other mentally in a sort of low level ‘hive mind’, these beings have a very similar degree of individuality as other humans, and can feel and understand human emotions.

Though they have a vast advantage over their living counterparts, the Legionaries are restricted by physical limits, mainly being their vulnerability to the head and spine. The skeleton needs the head and spine intact for the body to function, and for one to be destroyed the rest of the body looses a central foundation that all the limbs connect to.

Center: Standard Uniform

The standard issue uniform of a Legionary is grey in colour, allowing for adaptions with other environments with ease. This colour of choice has also lead to the civilian nickname “The Greatcoats”. The armour is a mixture of Roman, German and Japanese samurai armour. The main focus of protection is the helmet, mask and chest plate which aim to protect the vital parts, the head and spine. Armour plates in the style of a samurai ‘apron’ protect the pelvis region, while leg and arm guards have reduced broken limb casualties. The standard issue rifle is the L12A2 Assault rifle, a result of hundreds of years of development taking design feature of the L1A1, AK-47/74 and the Bren gun.

Soldiers require to undergo 15 years of basic training, with an additional 20 years of specialised and advanced training. This produces well rounded and highly professional soldiers, but makes the practice of raising armies a slow process. In an attempt to overcome this issue “reserve souls” where summoned to train in the physical world before returning back to the underworld, awaiting orders. However, this still makes the creation of new armies a long and complicated task to meet Imperial standards.

Left: Centurion, 22nd Legion

Captains in the Imperial Army are also know as Centurions in some legions and units, usually those who originate outside of Britain. They are identified by their double triangles, which is worn on the shoulders and collar of their uniform. The rank is also either painted or embedded in metal on the armour, most of the time on the right shoulder and helmet.

This Centurion is wearing his ceremonial additions to his helmet, the brow guard and crest in the style of Roman and Greek helmets. These additions are labeled as ceremonial as they are not considered practical additions to the armour, but can withstand battle. To wear these in battle is seen as a boast to the enemy, that the wearer is confident in his ability and a Imperial victory.

Right: Legionary, 16th ‘Red Grace’ Legion

The Legionary carries most of his belongings and equipment in his backpack, with compartments designated for military and personal belongings. This example is quite bare, down to official arrangements with little personal effects. This is a result of the 16th Legion’s troops choosing a more bare lifestyle. A compact shovel is carried on the pack when on the march, ready to be carried by the soldier in battle. The canister acts as a storage device, usually containing extra ammo for the squad’s machine gunner. The trench coat and other related sheet items are rolled up and strapped to the top.

Packs are usually loaded with additional equipment, with more space for specialised items and personal possessions due to the absence of food and water items. Soldiers usually heavily customise and personalise their packs to suit their role and configuration. This load is tolerable as stamina is not an issue to contend with.

The Red Grace Legion is a part of the four notorious Blood Legions, which consist of Legionaries that follow the Arch-Angel Achera. They are motivated by the goal to cleanse the earth of those who violate the laws of life. This usually involves burning guilty criminals in large bonfires as a symbolic ritual of cleansing. When the Legion occupied Moscow, Russia, they emptied half of the Max security prisons in the region over the course of 3 nights.
