Note: this is a HUGE picture. Download to see it full size.The fifth of my MLP customization tutorials: how to paint pony symbols. This is the main way I paint most of my symbols, with varying levels of shading and highlighting. I don't always if I'm using a style that calls for something else (see my art style series of ponies for examples) but this way is fairly standard. Feel free to play around with it to make it your own. When in doubt though, outline. Outlines make symbols pop and look very clean.

These tutorials are great, I've wanted to do a custom for a while but never really been sure about how to go about it. Maybe I'll actually get around to it.
Out of curiosity, about how much do you spend per pony?

Maybe you can help? My pony's going to have a dragon wrapped around one of it's back legs, then it's stomach and then it's head on one of the shoulders and fire across it's chest. (Sounds confusing...) How exactly would I go about painting between legs and underneath the pony?

Very carefully? I've done that a few times and patience plus a steady hand got me through. There aren't any tricks I can think of, sorry!
