Nice! While I prefer the more sober Bat-designs, I have to admit that in the mid 90s I liked very much the Azrael Batman costume, especially when drawn by Kelley Jones 31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lc7β¦

It's a nice design, because it's so excessive and overblown, yet it holds together quite well, strangely enough.

I haven't thought about it, but I think you hit the nail on the head, Julien-- true, it's excessive but yet it manages to be balanced at the same time.
All that said, I wouldn't like being the guy who has to draw the costume through 22 monthly comic-book pages.

I had no idea, but it makes sense-- between the complexity of the costume and the fact that back in the day they were supposed to deliver over 20 monthly pages, it sounds like a perfect scenario for deadline hell!

But lots of 90's types hid behind that in later years, claiming it was a 'parody' of industry excess.Β Sometimes excess is really just excess.Β And I think that stupid 90's bat suit was a case in point.

I don't agree. The original Azbat design, the one on which I based this drawing, was already a clusterfuck of conflicting elements, but it evolved and became more and more complex and bulky and EXTREME with every passing months, eventually adding a new mask, huge claws, razor wings and machineguns. This was done on purpose, in my opinion, and it was meant to deliver a point. That the original Batman eventually defeated this character by forcing him to abandon every piece of equipment is as clear a metaphor as can be. In my opinion there's no reason not to believe the writers when they claim that it was all done on purpose.
