That is just freaky. I actually like Beast’s Hulk/Cthulhu design, though.

In my opinion, the character has a lot of untapped potential.

WOW!!!!
I reallly wish Brendan would come back to comics. This is just the sorta thing he woulda produced if they'd let him loose on mainstream comics. We got so close to having him fill Ditko's shoes on Shade, not that Bachalo wasn't good but imagine... I'm drooling.

I'm not a superhero fan but I KNOW I'd enjoy something like this. Have you ever read McCarthy and Milligan's Paradax, the tale of a media-savvy superhero yob? Sheer genie arse.

Anyway, my hats off to you for doing this. It's bloody amazing and a fine tribute to the king.

The-Mirrorball-Man In reply to GhostPockets [2008-03-15 11:20:06 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Obviously, you inspired me to do this.

Unfortunately, these days, I don't think that mainstream american comics would welcome McCarthy with open arms. We're lucky to have had his "Solo" issue.

There are many, MANY great comics published right now. Most of them are not capes & spandex comics, though.

Any recommendations?

I actually got a new graphic novel out from the library t'other day, something by Garth Ennis called "The Boys" about some guys who go round killing superheroes. Haven't got round to looking at it properly yet but the premise sounds very Marshall Law-esque to me, though as it's Garth I'm sure it will be much more disgusting, ultra-violent and above all much more IRISH than that. Should be good then

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Mirrorball-Man In reply to GhostPockets [2008-03-17 04:33:35 +0000 UTC]

"The Boys" is just another take on the superheroes theme. There are much better things out there, such as Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim", Corey Lewis' "Sharknife", Ross Campbell's "Wet Moon", Derek Kirk Kim's "Same Difference", or, if you can get your hands on it, anything David B. has ever done.

Now if I had enough guts, I'd redraw the whole 1960's X-Men run using these versions of the characters.

Haha, awesome

I love all the little details, it's fun to scrutinise your character designs, loads of stuff to discover. I'm not that familiar with the "modern" versions of these characters, but X-Men was one of the superhero-comics I actually used to like a lot in the late 60s early 70s.

And I love how this is the-same-but-different as your other X-Men deviation. I had real fun comparing the two^^. I hope you're gonna do a third version some time in the future

What do I like best? I guess the Beast. Awesome design. And the Cyclops head is brilliant. As is Angels costume^^.

Oh, and thanks for reminding me that I have to get some of McCarthy's stuff. I know he's a genius, but I haven't got anything by him (yet^^).
