Description My Froggy mermaid bathing in the sun dolling herself up.

This took a very long time...

Odd size cut out of what was left from a scrapped older painting.

Gouache and water colour pencils. Some level adjusting in Photoshop as the gold in the painting interfered with the photography.

SUper stunning, you arty crafty maiden. GLorious colours, well enhanced by your clever techniques and artistic witchery. Only an Irish artist could make such greeeeeens. She's not at all scary, I don't think, and would doubtless make a great kisser.
Is she local?
Wonderfully decorative flowers, pink's a lovely contrast.
Are they them water lillies what I think I remember you saying were giving you turbulent times?
Well worth the effort.
It really looks like the sun beaming through the top of the water.
Reminds me of a fairy tale, for which you have a natural flare.

Thanks very much Mr.
Hadnt worked with many greens for a while, must stop my self-flagellation when it comes to colour though. I can't seem to stop as i'm painting a piece in almost all browns and one i'm hoping to be just manically colourful.
when you paint do you think before hand about the colour you'd like to use? which comes first the colour or the image? with me it's the idea, and then i get bogged down with the palette and how i'd like to try X,Y and Zed. just to see how it'll look.
the browns one is this thing my minds been stuck on for a good few months about the idea of a moth being trapped living in the dark but being obsessed with the light and what a strange curse it is. the painting doesn't do it justice in my head so i'll probably do another more abstract one too.

Thanks

Hahaha. You don't wear a knotted rope around your waist, do you? Unlikely as it seems, I do think about the general colour scheme before I start. But gouache can easilly become chalky and grey-si, as you know, if you're not bold. But the image always comes first, and that should dictate the colours (to me) "red one or green one?"
But whatever you do is right for you, cos you're you and not anyone else, as I'm sure you know.
Got an urge to experiment, and see what happens? you'd be mad not to.
I've got quite the horrific phobia about moths, but being obsessively (unsurprisingly) fixated on that which you cannot have, is very much at the heart of a human/insectoid condition.
Reminds of a Bauhaus song, "hair of the dog".
I guess the day you're 100% satisfied with a painting, is the day you'll stop painting?
I'm certainly destined to continue, cos all I do is shit.
Ha! Don't answer that.
I love the variety you're diving into, in technique and theme, flitting from the psyche to the storybook to the decorative and roundabouts.

We've talked of your moth problem before. If it helps i know more people with horrific moth phobias then spider phobias. Which i personally think is mad. Spiders are clearly freakier. Spider moth hybrid...that would be terrifying.

I am flitting all about the place, but so is my head. Just went for a very long walk to avoid sitting in my room waiting for time to pass. Bleh.

You're new painting is stunning, I'll go comment on it asap. I do hope you wont stop. Some day when I have a job again i'd love to buy a painting off you, if you were selling, and put it into my house. or flat. Wherever I end up living that isn't a little room over filled with plants, books and paintings.

"Here's your head, what's your hurry" has always puzzled me, cos it suggests a beheading?
That's a very touching compliment, you actually wanting one of my pics. Which one would you want?
Obivously, I would not take any money from you. You're a fellow artist nearly half my age.
Walking is great! Hope your head is clear or relaxed?

I've never heard that saying. If I heard it in conversation I think i'd presume it was sexual.

Janey, they're all great Mr. Kev. your newest one, which I have very boldly not commented on yet (at least not under the actual painting) is amazing. they all are.
Half your age or not, an artist has to be kept in rollys, tea and alcohol at very least.

Walking, when you have no where to walk to, and no where to be is very satisfying.

I'm a bit more relaxed yeah. I ended up a bit involuntarily isolated for a while there which is never good for anyones head. I got really lonely and it did weird things to my head.

Do hope you're doing well. when I walk past random lane ways I think of your paintings. Your lane ways are nicer then the real ones. I still wouldn't want to walk down either though. They both have a bit of a 'Here be dragons' feel to them when you peep to far into the dark.

You might be right. (about the saying) trust me to be so innocent and oblivious of sexual undertones. But I must be somebody's cousin Kevin. If only I knew whose?
Ha! I Haven't hear "Janey" in years, not since the 70s. "Janey Mack!?!" Spose it's a feminine version of "Jesus"?
I'm sorry you got lonely (but glad you're out of it) Weird, cos you obviously have loads of friends and Dr Boyfriend too? Maybe it was brought on by you being ill and not able to socialise? Did you just have a cold?

Anyway, cheers to your good health.
Yes, don't be going down those Dragon lanes, unless you got a knight in fire-proof armour with you.
I have a certain sense of familiarity, if not "home" in the dark pokeyness.
Dunno if I've said this before, but if I had a choice of walking through a gang of black hoodies, or white ones at 3am, I would always choose the black. I've never been attacked by anyone of colour, only ever by vicious pissed-up whites.

Anyway, cheers to your good health and staying in well-lit busy safety with good company.

Thanks Mr.

I've avoided being beaten up too much in my life, I avoid gangs of men of any age/race/social background.

Just seems wise.

I hadn't seen any one for a while, other to course people, who, like work people, don't count.

Janey Mack is still commonly used over here, don;t know what it's from. I always thought it was a very Irish thing.

Hope you're doing well too.
I'm jaded and bogged down from course work, so i'll be hitting the sack early. Juggling painting, socialising, internetting, edu-ma-kating and eating is harder then it sound

Sorry for my tardy replies I shall endeavour to reply by tomorrow evening!

Be good!

I thought you meant you were literally "juggling" as well as painting and studying. I wouldn't put it past you. I bet you can juggle!
Yes, I heard "Janey Mack" from my mum, of course. Before she became totally foul-mouthed with "F" this and "F" that. You must be used to it, but my experience of Dubliners (some many years ago, of course) is that their swearing is hysterical. Every second word.
Or maybe that was just my Mum's side?

Are you OK with less than 8 hours sleep?
I average about 6, but it's really taking it's toll now.

The-Nanette-O In reply to TDKev [2011-11-29 01:05:42 +0000 UTC]

I am well used to cursing, depending on the company I rein it in though.

I can only juggle with two balls, so not really great. I know professional jugglers. Never thought that's what they'd grow up to be!

I used to barely sleep. Now I really like at least eight hours, but normally only get four or five.

Hope you start sleeping better soon. Being alone in the dark with your mind can be horrific.

TDKev In reply to The-Nanette-O [2011-11-30 20:35:08 +0000 UTC]

I hope you have peaceful sleep too. I woke up Monday night at 4am, thinking next door were playing a really noisy computer game, with this weird electronic voice saying "Mantoo", or "Maniboo" everytime they shot an alien, like every 2 seconds. Seemed to go on for ages, and I was just about to bang on the wall and shout "Shut the fuck up" when I realized it was a dream. Very unsettling, like my brain was stuck in some cracked groove.
At least I understand sleep paralysis now, or semi-waking with your body still paralysed.

Still, enough of that, here's to silly happy dreams.
Do you dream of faeries and mermaids?
HAve you ever dreamt you can fly?

I've had the flying dreams. but now since i was younger.

No fantasy dreams i'm afraid. How abut yourself? What do you dream about.

HA, I don't remember them much, but judgung by the contorted state I wake up in, hanging off the bed, it's probably just as well.
Occassionally, pleasant ones, if remembered, very vivid and film like.
Maybe the best we should hope for, is just a good night's rest.
Hope your tried and tested resilience is keeping you afloat. And any stress, you can just let float away.
To quote "Annie", tomorrow's just a day away!" and what's not here today, can be there tomorrow? or vice versa???

I hope the books you've been reading have been liberating or soothing.

I'm sorry, that was a stupid thing to say. You're obviously very caring and somewhat selfless. You wouldn't want it, but I wish you could be cloned, so Nanette no.2 could come over here and sort things out.

Did you paint all those rays of light? Seems like very tricky thing to do. Very interesting idea!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Nanette-O In reply to sem505 [2011-10-26 16:03:44 +0000 UTC]

They're in the painting indeed, thank you . I lifted the pigment off in those lines when i was finished and the piece was dry using latex masking fluid. I've found in the past it rips a few layers of colour off if you paint it over water colours (much to my dismay on some occasions)then went over them in a very dilute mixture of gold and white gouache and water.
Balancing the levels in photoshop when it was done helped a lot as the camera flash kept reflecting off the gold particals too much
The dodge tool, which is a contrast balancing tool helped to make them pop.
I dont really like calling them digital when i've spent weeks painting them and 10 minutes in Photoshop adjusting them. but i know some people might disagree with calling them traditional if there is any digital manipulation.
But i guess it doesnt really look much different to the painting in real life and if i hadn't used photoshop it would have looked very different.

Yeah, that's sounds pretty complicated, but really cool effect nonetheless -- it really looks like you shot it with sun shining through the window.
As far as Photoshop adjustments concerned, if you just tried to make picture look closer to the real thing, I think it's a perfectly fair game. I really don't know how anybody in their right mind would disagree with that

It took for f*cking ever though. Here i thought i'd do a nice simple mermaid picture to do something that wasn't so in depth for a change. Had to make it as complicated as possible. bleh

Ta Mr.
As you'll see in my reply to Sem there is a bit of dodge tool on the rays, but they exist similarly in the painting. the white in the wash i used for them reacted terribly to the flash as it's the only white pigment in the whole piece.

Met up with Mr. fox for tea today. and had a heart to heart with him about whether colour balancing a photo of a traditional piece to make it look more like the original painting disqualifies it from being considered traditional and makes it digital?
He reckons not if no new elements are added and it's just cropping and leveling. Don't know though. what do you think?

Any plans for weeny? want to go out Saturday night?

theclockworkwizard In reply to The-Nanette-O [2011-10-26 19:17:41 +0000 UTC]

I agree with him, if there is nothing added to it in photoshop and you are only using photoshop to make the picture you are using online look as much like the actual painting as possible then its not digital, it is using digital technology to make the online photograph look as acurate to the original as possible

I wont be out for halloween as Ive put no thought or effort into a costume, said thought and effort on top of awkwardness is why I rarely venture out for what is my favorite holiday of the year
