Description Part 2 of my preliminary sketches using my new Intuos 3

Here's the first draft of the prelim. sketch: [link]

Some things have been added/altered.

Used 's & 's photos of their dobermans as reference material.

I will move these sketches to scraps once the final piece is done -- in about 2 weeks

Ya see, I did this on my break time in between classes. Finals are coming up, so all of my energy/time has been put into those. In the meantime, like any other artist, this is the sort of thing I do to keep myself partially sane.

There's no guarantee though...

~~~
This is Axel (the Doberman) with his pet Sevy (yes, he's a vampire...). Or is it the other way around...? These days, I don't rightly know.
Still in its rough stages. Axel's line art is pretty much done and to my joyous liking. Sevy, needs work, only because I use 9023854092385 photos for reference
I changed Axel's mouth and then at the last minute decided to add his master to the piece. It really made one hellava difference.
My goal with the characters and story I'm creating is to make them as realistic as possible. With this in mind, much practice and patience is needed.
Intuos 3 has greatly aided me in this. I get my drawings done much faster now, with better precision and quality. Part one of the testing is done.
Part 2 will consist of actually coloring the piece. I plan to do a few styles to see what sort of effects I get. It's a way for me to loosen up. My immediate reaction is to go for the bloody jugular and dish out a realistic painting, but I realize that other areas of style need to be explored with this new toy I call a tablet. I probably won't have it done until this semester is over though. Until then, I'll upload any progression work I happen to get around to.
Note: I'm trying to make sure that the angle of Sevy's head, his posture, and all that are anatomically correct. It's the angle of his face and head that I think there might be something SLIGHTLY off with. Hmm...
PLEASE help me by giving insightful and HELPFUL critiques, maybe some links to some reference material...?
Much obliged, in advance
I think the problem with Sevy's head is that his face looks flat, very two dimensional. My only thought is that the chin/mouth area is what's causing it to happen. Too long or not curved/tucked in enough, maybe, but I can't really make that decision if I don't know the facial features of him in your mind.
But you did an excellent job with Axel. I really like the whole thing overall as well~ :3
Thank you! This critique was very helpful! Well-rounded and thoughtful. I had similar thoughts - too flat...But. the part about his chin/mouth, I had overlooked.
I kept thinking maybe it was the upper part of his head...damn. *back to the drawing board*
