Description

As a heads up, I broadcast myself playing games on Twitch almost every day and while I am affiliated with Twitch, I would like to be partnered with Twitch which requires 75 viewerships in the span of 30 days.  If you like my work and want to support me in some way, please see if you could watch my stuff when I'm broadcasting as it would help me out a lot and you don't even need a twitch account to do so.  Although if you do we can talk about stuff while we are live and it would help make the stream a lot more interesting.  Just click on the link and see if you could catch me live!

In addition if you want to support me even more, consider subscribing to me on Twitch for as low as $5 USD per month, doing so would allow you to use a special emoticon on my streams and other channels as well and as the more people subscribe the more emoticons you can use in the future.  Also Amazon Prime members can subscribe to me for free without paying any money.

Finally people who are subscribed to my Twitch will also get discounts on color commissions as being Tier 1 would get you 10 USD off on a color commission!

Please and thanks!  Now back to the description

__________

So...where to begin

Well, I guess we should say that this is my 575th color commission and this is kind of a special colored work as this is a new series that I get to work on and not only that, it's actually is a big anniversary for said series as it's their 25th anniversary as their series debut on September 28, 1998 (so one again I have proof that 1998 is basically the best year and you can't convince me otherwise) with Konami's Pop'n Music.  For those who don't know, Pop'n Music is basically Dance Dance Revolution but with hands (which is also by Konami so that's funny ) which has players slapping 9 buttons featuring original and licensed music over the years and has multiple installments in the arcade and is still going strong after many years...in Japan only but hey.  I was actually lucky to play some of the games over the years, whether it be imports from conventions or actually playing one in the Japanese arcades.  I can see the appeal of the game as well as the charm the games presented.

Speaking of charm, part of it's charm is the multiple characters that are featured in the game.  I don't believe if they actually effected game play but they do help add more to the world of Pop'n Music and I guess for their 25th anniversary, the commissioner, TheSapphireMind, wanted to feature two of their main characters in a celebratory picture...and because you kind of know me a little too well of what stuff I put out, they are both in scuba gear because reasons   But yeah for this picture we got Mimi (left, rabbit) and Nyami (right, cat) wearing scuba gear in a concept like sheet where each character has a pose and mugshot showing off different scuba gear with Mimi having regular gear and Nyami having a full face mask and even a hoodie.  So interesting combination of gear for the both of them even though it slightly begs the question how would Mimi communicate underwater seeing how she's stuck with regular gear here compared to Nyami, that's a good question...

So in terms of Mimi and Nyami with their character in whole, you might be wondering what do these two girls do in the world of Pop'n Music...*thinks*...I think the bigger question to ask is, what didn't they do?   So when I started coloring this picture, I got to learn a bunch of things about the series and the lore and it gets wild, mainly with these two characters.  So first of all I've checked but despite the two being very similar with one being a rabbit and one being a cat, they aren't twins.  Heck they aren't even related, they just look a like and do a lot of things similarly.  Which okay?  But these two are pretty smart at a young age so that basically allows them to do, well whatever the heck they want as the lore in this gets a bit wild all things considering.  This include to actually doing scuba diving which is canon in the series so it's not that far off with what you see in the picture.  It's just here the suit it's a bit more original (not that I don't think there are any official pictures with them in diving gear?  Someone has to correct me on that if that's not the case.)  But you get the idea as the two wear the same wetsuit featuring little references of the series on it, it's just that again the two wearing different gears.  But yeah it's clear that Nyami is better character as she picks the better gear that makes more sense and she's cute, both gear and kitty :3

So onto coloring and this gets a little tricky.  If you are familiar with the Pop'n series, they radically changed art styles over the series with the first one would look like something that an elementary school kid might of drawn why hey has it's charm.  But over time the art style has looked more professionally drawn look to them in both character design and coloring while still being cute.  As you see these two are based on how they look in the latest series and this included how they were shaded and including some lighting in some areas and some gradient.  Granted I did omitted the gradient effect as I feel like it was minor enough that I didn't included.  Plus I noticed it while I was shading and it was a bit too late to include them so oh well it wasn't a big deal.  What is the big deal was something that was requested that I added into this picture that took some time to get right...*inhales*...colored lines

*Dramatic Music Plays*

Okay so, the modern Pop'n music uses colored lines on their characters but not everywhere, only on selected parts.  So if you are aware of how I handle this in the past, I just redraw the picture with the color line and yes it did took forever.  As at the time I didn't know how to color the lines properly without making a mess especially with Shoxxe's line art as part of the reason why it's almost hard is because the line art and the white background share the same layer.  Usually it's better to separate the two in different layers but seeing how this picture was made traditionally and not digital that's understandable why it's like that.  But I was shown how to do so as I'm guessing there was something else that I've missed and that required me to using GIMP.  Now GIMP is decent for adding in some later effects and text but it's not the best drawing and paint program so it took me a while and while I did achieve it with the additional layer and got some coloring to just the lines there were some issues.  Mainly when I added in the other color layers, it looks odd and didn't came out well.  I guess it only works with just a white background but more importantly when I transferred the file to SAI, I've noticed that it was actually the Luminosity layer which isn't a good way to color line art   But later on I was given a version of this where Sapphire actually did erase the white background and gave it to me and I used an mask effect that I had in a psd that my friend used in another picture and now I have the ability to color lines.  That's great...I hate it ^^.  But yeah if I have to color lines to match a specific art style I'll do it but seeing how this series only colors some of the lines any future pictures with Pop'n I'll just stick with black lines as that's what I do best

By the way, if you caught that last sentence, there's actually more picture of Pop'n that I'm going to color in various scenarios, with different gear...I think you slightly know where this is going

Anyways, hopefully this is a good anniversary picture for the series and I hope you like it
