Description
This mask was handmade by myself as a visual concept for my previous music band Lyan ( post rock ). Infortunately, it was never used. But i'm still fond of it !It is made of clay and specially fit for my face, painted with acrylic colours. 80hours of work.
It represent the character of Hannya in the japanese traditional No.

Since it is made of clay isn't it very heavy? Can you actually wear it as a normal mask?

Did you use only clay or did you use some kind of base mask or such underneath as a building ground? I just wonder because I plan to do an oni mask in the future too.

I used a base of plaster bands that i've putted on my face and then, i put clay step by step, but it's not the best way to make a mask i think...

I think I might use a plastic face mask as a base and work over it.. I just hope the clay will stick to it.

The clay will not stick on plastic, even on plaster, i sometimes had to use some glue to strengthen some part once they have dried. I think the best way is fiber glass, but it's toxic when you manipulate it. Once it's dry, there's no problem. There is no easy way, I fear... :-/

Ouch damn. :/ But do you think even with a plastic mask I could build on top of it (use it as a building base to get the right "face form") and when the clay dries take it off the plastic mask? Would the clay be strong enough on its own after the mask is not there to, err, support it I guess? (I planned to use papier-maché clay powder)

The problem with plastic is nothing can really stick on it, and you have to use water to shape your clay so... you see the problem. With plaster bands, you lose your eyebrows and beard BUT, because of the water, some clay will mix with the plaster and the ensemble may not fall apart.
But when clay dry, some crack lines may appear, and you'll have to fill it with glue and mastic. It's a very long process, each time you use clay, you'll have to wait for 1 or 2 days until it's completely dried before your next step.
However, once it's finished, it's solid. But heavy ^^'

Would using a pasteboard/thick paper mask work better? I get the impression clay would stick better to it.. right?

yes, it could work, but put something underneath to keep the shape of your face or the water will deform the structure

Thanks, but for my next attempts, i wish to try fiberglass or resin, clay is not the best way for such a mask : a little bit heavy and some drying problems...
