Description Mourning Star is one of the Avae, or "Nights" as Equestrians came to know them, just like Azure Night. In fact she and Azure are cousins and were trained together to become warriors for the herd. When the time came for them to take their Rite, the stress and harshness of the test drove Mourning insane. She believed it was her destiny to return to the herd and lead them back to their ancestral home (now known as Equestria) and take it back from the Equestrians. She would succeed where her ancestors failed.

Azure could not allow this and the two did battle in the wilderness. Both exhausted and fatigued from the Rite as it was already, the two fought a desperate struggle, leading to Azure regretfully slaying Mourning. Or so he thought. Whether through rage, insanity or determination, she managed to cling on. It's unknown how it happened, but when she awoke she had noticed her tail had extended becoming more draconic. Somehow she managed to tap into her latent Ryuma Genes (which all Avae have) and had taken her first step to becoming a full fledged Ryuma. This caused her to believe that in fact she is the reincarnation of Avaenan herself, the herd's ancient matriarch who had taken in the blood of a dragon to become a powerful Ryuma and lead her herd to dominating the Everfree. This, this was destiny.

At first, Mourning Star intended to return to the herd, but a mix of rage and madness caused her to see them as weak, too weak to fulfill her plan. So she chose to bide her time. For years she remained in the Wilderness, capturing potential Avae taking their Rite and seducing them into joining her cause should they demonstrate qualities she felt were useful for her. Then on that fateful night when, when the Mare in the Moon returned, Mourning set loose a massive pack of Timber Wolves to descend upon the Avae compound. It was a mass slaughter. That was when she caught sight of Azure Night, now a fairly high ranking officer, with his little sister; Blue Moon, attempting to flee. With that, Mourning followed for she had a fiendish scheme in mind for her revenge on Azure. When Azure fell from the cliff-face trying to protect his sister, Mourning swooped in and saved Moon. Frightened, yet grateful, Moon insisted that they go save Azure, but Mourning insisted that he was dead (though she knew better than to count out Azure) and that they must get out of there.

With that, Mourning Star had wiped the slate clean and with her band of Avae defectors and Blue Moon in tow, they made their way silently into Equestria. Over the months, Mourning would brainwash Moon into believing her brother was indeed a murderer. She wove a tale how he went insane during their Rite and nearly killed her. Mourning used every lie she could and soon Blue Moon fell into the fold as well, now believing that her beloved brother was power mad and intended to ruin the herd. It didn't help either when word got out that Azure survived and joined the Equestrian Guard. Mourning used that to show the rest that this was the true sign of his betrayal. And from then on, they called themselves "Avaenen" after their herd's founder. In the common tongue it means "Nightfall" and they would see to it that they take back what they believe is rightfully theirs. Whether it be funding criminals, setting monsters loose or attacking small villages, this Night Supremacist group would cause much destruction and anarchy, even clashing directly with Azure Night and his team, the Mares Marginis.

I have only one small gripe about this character.
The whole, sudden tail growth thing. Just woke up one day and had it.
If it was caused by magic, then sure,
but a mutation wouldn't happen overnight.
Perhaps when raiding a old tomb of her ancestors, she falls into a sacred pool.
The liquid would have dissolved a normal pony, but since she's half dragon it just burns her instead.
Then over then next few weeks she starts getting more dragon like.

Well yes it is magic...in a sense. I didn't go into detail on how because it's its own thing all together and would require more than what a simple backstory will allow.

See unlocking the latent Ryuma blood to cause this sort of evolution requires a number of factors. First and foremost they have to have a rather pure lineage to Avaenan herself (pure bloods). Though generations diluted it, having a purer lineage makes this more likely to happen. As she and Azure are direct descendants and can trace their matrilineal, there is a higher percentage in them. Secondly, they have to be physically fit. The transformation will put strain on their bodies as it is forcing them to take on more draconic aspects. Having the stamina, proper build, etc. will ensure they can survive the transformation. Finally, they require a trigger. This trigger is when both their body and minds are under the most extreme stress. They need to be essentially at their breaking point. It's not simply the stress that does it however, their will and determination has to be stronger. Basically, they need to be of sterner stuff. The kind of warrior that doesn't care if their body shatters into bits, they must refuse death if you will. They must have a conviction that even in the face of death, even as they draw that last breath, they will force themselves to breath longer to achieve it. Many, if not the majority of the Avae, great death more gladly if it is in battle, for they are willing to do so. But there are those of them that refuse to die. It's not a fear of death, it is the determination to achieve something before death. The third factor here is the most important however as technically even those that don't fulfill the other two can achieve this state, it's just much less likely and success also isn't as likely. Most Avae don't even know how to do it, or that it's even possible as there were so few that even achieved it and the few apart from Avaenan herself that could exist more in tales and legends, typically ending with the Avae dying in the end as it was a fierce battle and they just needed that edge to ensure victory.

In Mourning Star's case, even as she lay dying with a gaping hole in her chest, bleeding out in the mud, she refused to die until she achieved her goal. To take back what she believes was rightfully the Avae's. If she died, she'd never succeed. And it was this insane willpower that triggered the dormant Ryuma within her and caused the transformation, giving her just enough vitality and strength to survive. The stress coupled with the will to live causes certain electro-chemical signals in the brain to be sent which releases a hormone that triggers the Ryuma's magic that lies dormant in their DNA that causes the rapid transformation. Sort of like your pool idea except instead of physically having the pony melt away, it's more that their emotional and mental state have stripped what pony was in them, causing the dragon to come out. This is both a mental and physical change but can only be reached through this psychological degradation of their pony self.

Most might see it as being kinda like going super saiyan though in all honesty I got more the inspiration from from the ríastrad Celtic folklore. Also known as a "Warp Spasm" or "Battle Frenzy" , in which particularly powerful warriors (such as Cu Chulainn) would transform into a powerful monster that would boost their strength and stamina as they become an unstoppable force.

Like I said, this was it's own entity altogether and I didn't exactly feel 100% necessary to include in a brief description of a character's backstory as this is more generalized lore of the Avae than pertaining to one. So I apologize for any confusion.

Ah I get it,
it's kinda like a lycanthropy transformation that's triggered by sheer will-to-live.
That's completely acceptable.
