Description It's Monday, so I'm off today. I thought I'd post this painting of a very typical American house I did a while back. It's watercolour, about 12" by 18". Some of you have probably already seen it.

Thank you so much! I think "blind luck" had a lot to do with it.

I remember this one and still think it is one of your most incredible paintings, Chris. You did this one with such precision and excellence.

Thank you so much! One of the most frustrating things about this business is that the really good paintings never hang around very long. My walls are covered with rejects!

Rejects...Please! You don't paint rejects, Chris.

I like that you even included the brown spots in the lawn. So typically American! ^^

Thanks very much, Jon! This one was kind of a bear to paint, with all the bricks, but I thought it turned out okay.

EXCELLENT! Thanks very much! I was kind of hoping for a little feedback on it - I think some of the "serious" artists might not understand it, but I really couldn't resist (and the "serious" artists can go jump in the lake). This one was designed as a static avatar by and then I added the gif so she stuck her tongue out. I was sooo proud.

Beautiful, it has a lot of details
Painting the bricks must have taken ages

theancientofdays In reply to Dutchy-89 [2007-09-09 10:25:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! Yeah, the bricks were pretty hard because I kept having to change colours, and then had to change brush-strokes in order to keep the perspective right!

Thanks very much! I'm kind of a stickler for detail on houses - they hold really still, so I can't use "it moved around too much" as an excuse for not doing the details.

Thanks very much! I don't think this one was as hard as it looks. The brick took a lot of time, but for the most part it was just a matter of slapping the paint down in the right places.

Thanks very much! Houses are really pretty easy - it's all just a matter of getting the perspective right. It's just angles and stuff that doesn't move around much.

Wow. There's a house down the street from me that looked exactly like that, with the bricks and flowers and everything. Someone bought it and are remodeling it, so it doesn't anymore, but.....

This is very good!!

Maybe it is the house down the street! I really appreciate it - I kind of like painting houses. It's a nice change once in a while and it's hard to get wrong.

Why, thank you! The majority of homes around here look pretty much like this - brick ranches are really popular here.

Me neither. I grew up with two-story wooden houses with very high roofs. I always said I'd never live in a brick ranch, and thankfully never have.

theancientofdays In reply to blood-and-death [2007-08-31 08:58:13 +0000 UTC]

Very cool indeed! I never understood why they make kitchens here so tiny and with short little ceilings. They get hot enough anyway without cramming all the heat into a little space. When we were driving through New England, Pepper kept saying, "Oh! The houses! Even the ugly ones are two stories!"

I do give the south a lot of credit for knowing how to put a proper porch on a house - the older houses all have these whopping huge porches.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blood-and-death In reply to theancientofdays [2007-09-01 13:07:52 +0000 UTC]

ya, most houses here don't even have a porch

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theancientofdays In reply to blood-and-death [2007-09-02 10:17:08 +0000 UTC]

It kind of makes you wonder why that would be. Maybe porches wouldn't be able to withstand piles of snow.

D: that reminds me! we had a back porch once, and It snowed so there was 4 feet on the roof. so we had to go onto the roof to shovel it off (it was heavy wet snow), I was taking a small break when my little sister (who was nine at the time) came out from under the porch to ask me if i was breaking the ice on the roof, i said i wasn't, there was a loud creek and the entire thing fell! luckly i was standing on the main roof at the time, and my sis had just gotten out from under it

theancientofdays In reply to blood-and-death [2007-09-03 10:54:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, that certainly explains why porches are so scarce up north! Sounds like that situation could have been a lot worse for both of you!
