Description Today's work, a commissioned watercolour of a very happy baby wearing a christening gown. It's about 9x13", which means that baby's head is only about two inches across - difficult detail work in watercolour.

The whole thing is really cute

Thanks! The background gave me fits on this one. And for a white gown, it was surprisingly challenging; it's hard to make white clothes actually look like clothes.

That truly is adorable! Lovely baby, lovely painting. The hair on the forehead looks so.... "soft", just like the hair of babies is in reality!
I bet the parents were very happy with this

Wow! Thank you very much! I was really happy with the way the hair turned out here; I don't know if I could do it again like that if I tried!

Thanks very much, Jon! This one was pretty complicated, really - painting something white is pretty difficult anyway, but painting white clothing is particularly hard. Glad you think it turned out okay!

Thanks very much! This one turned out pretty well, I think - I was kind of going for an "old-fashioned" look.

Thanks very much! Truth be told, the reference photo had the baby with a not-quite-as-cute expression, so I changed it just a bit to make her look a lot happier.

Bwahaha...someone's breaking the cardinal rule of rendering...(paint what you see, not what you know) :*)

Absolutely! But then, I've always said that one of the rules should be to break the rules.

Thanks! This one was a bit of a challenge, that's for sure. I have an unfortunate tendency to put off the challenging ones until just before they're due, but they're never as difficult as I think they're going to be.

theancientofdays In reply to Dabull04 [2008-02-14 11:29:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I was really worried about this one because I knew it would be a challenge, but it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I used that ruined flat brush for the hair here, like I do for animal fur, and I was really happy with the result. Hair's pretty difficult to get right than small.

Oh my, the background looks so, I can't describe it....old-looking? xD It looks nice.

I can't imagine how you painted all those details, it must be hard work. =O

Thank you very much! The owner of one of the businesses near the gallery mentioned the background as well. It was a nightmare - I kept having puddling and spotting until I washed it over with sepia. I really appreciate the kind comment. I put this one off for two weeks because I was afarid I'd really mess it up.
