Oh god XD This reminds me of the time that I worked at the fancy seafood restaurant at the airport. Chablis was one of the most ordered wines there I can imagine this painting hanging on the wall there

Hey, thanks! Maybe if enough restaurants see this, I could get some work from them. I didn't know that airports ever had good food...

This is pretty amazing Chris, that label on the bottle must've been a bugger to do

Thanks! Oh, it wasn't so tough. I really appreciate the kind words - still lifes don't generally get a whole lot of attention.

Yeh but there is always something about still life that makes you stare i think and this is one of them

Thta's the funny thing about still life and landscapes - they may not get a million favourites and comments, but they are very popular sellers, so I usually try to have a few lying around.
Oh dear. Rain. I'll have to break out the rubbish bags to cover the work if I'm going to be setting up my display in the rain!

The bottle looks so nice 8D
Glass is very difficult, imo, so I gotta admire this.
Plus, I am now hungry. I blame you.

Sorry to make you hungry. Glad you like it - glass really is pretty difficult, so I guess I could say I enjoyed the challenge here.

Looking at this is making me hungry. Wonderful job the shading is great. I love the colors you used in order to get the realistic look to it. Nice work. ^^

Thank you very much! ^^ There really was more colour mixing in this one than in most of my work - I was really trying to get it right. Oysters are hard.

The juxtaposition of these luxury items and that stormy background wash is a wonderful contrast! It's a bit disorienting, but not in a bad way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theancientofdays In reply to SirNaelyan [2009-04-05 11:06:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, I decided that with all the little details in the foreground, I ought to go pretty vague with the background so that they wouldn't compete too much. Thanks for the thoughtful comment! ^^

theancientofdays In reply to simplelines [2009-04-02 08:27:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! ^^ The commissioner wanted a dramatic lighting effect, so I went very heavy on both the shadows and the highlights. I wish I'd had a bit of a steadier hand for the lettering on the bottle, but I keep reminding myself that it's supposed to be a painting, not a photograph.

j0rosa [2009-04-02 02:13:26 +0000 UTC]

wow, total beauty
how did you manage or put the white outline for the glasses?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theancientofdays In reply to j0rosa [2009-04-02 08:17:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! That's not white - that's just the paper. I used a small flat brush to bring the wash right up close to the edge of the pencil mark on my sketch before adding the paint to the wash water. The hard part was matching the wash inside the glasses to the wash on the outside - it looks darker when wet, so I had to take that into account... On the bottle, it was easier because it's a different colour.

j0rosa In reply to theancientofdays [2009-04-02 09:26:39 +0000 UTC]

... but so mani thin white lines... how neat is tht, never tried this technique

theancientofdays In reply to j0rosa [2009-04-02 15:14:28 +0000 UTC]

You have to be careful about where you place the wash water, though.

ultimatedogluva528 [2009-04-02 01:18:21 +0000 UTC]

Great job, as always! It always amazes me that you're able to make bottles/glasses look like they're actually made of glass! I would definitely find that too difficult!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theancientofdays In reply to ultimatedogluva528 [2009-04-02 08:22:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! ^^ Glass is really tricky - I teach a special class on it when I teach watercolour. The actual painting of glass isn't too hard if you know what to paint. That's the hard part - you have to see the glass and the lights and shadows within the glass to be able to approach painting it. I always say, "Paint what you actually see, not what you think you ought to see."
