Description Lately I've had a lot of Russian history buffs visiting my page, and I thought, "Well, what better means of shameless self-promotion than to paint Nicholas II?"
Nicholas was the last Tsar of Russia, and a really nice guy, as tsars go. He was a family man first, and would probably have much rather spent his time grilling burgers with his kids than running the largest country in the world.
At 7" by 11" this is a small watercolour portrait, but I think the likeness is pretty good.

Original available.

Thank you! I'm a big Russian History fan - they aren't big sellers, but they make for pretty good samples for potential clients.

Thank you very much! I do a lot of people portraits around the end of the year; Nicholas was just for fun, though.

Wow! Thanks very much! I'm really not very good at drawing - I usually just start with a really bad sketch and then "fix" it with the paint.

You did a great job on Nicholas II! The likeness is spot on. What a tragic story about the royal family....(I'm a history buff as well. ) Did you hear that they believe that they finally found the bodies of his only son and one of the missing girls? Guess Anna was a crackpot all along, hmm? LOL! What a terrific scandle it created at the time though.

Thanks very much! I had been meaning to paint Nicholas for a long time. Yeah, I kind of figured Anna was goofing, but she really took in a lot of people; makes me wonder what form of mental illness she suffered from. Yep, I understand they've got everybody now. I figured they'd eventually turn up; kind of a load off the minds of those of us who've been following the story for so long.

You know, it was kind of a let down for me. The mystery was gone then. I loved to think about it and wonder, you know? But it does put everything in place, which is how it should be. I suppose Anna suffered from delusion of granduer or something like that. She was very convincing...makes it all the more sad doesn't it? I think she really did believe herself to be Anastasia.

theancientofdays In reply to Aprilart [2007-09-19 12:19:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think she did, too. Her real family had a history of mental illness, and she was suffering from pretty severe depression when they dragged her out of the canal.

Thank you very much! I usually don't have any full-colour portraits lying around the gallery to show people who come in, so I thought I'd better do one as a sample.

I think it's a very, very interesting trunk ! And I also think your great aunt must have been an interesting woman. Working for the tsar and his family.

I don't know very much about her, but the trunk is really full of fascinating things; I'm not sure what her position was, exactly, but reading the letters and notes makes me think she was probably a seamstress.

Yes! You got it right! I made a kind of a dumb joke - "I imagine sew" sounds like "I imagine so". Sorry. Kind of a silly joke, really.

A friend of mine is doing his english assignment on the Romanovs.. So he's looked at heaps of pictures of the room where they all died and stuff xD;;

Great work! The shading on his face really caught my eye x3

theancientofdays In reply to Cool-Vin [2007-09-01 06:39:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The scanner doesn't do this one quite the justice it deserves, so I'll get a better snap today. As for that room, the famous photo where the wall's all crumbly and stuff is a little misleading - they took the picture after they tore up the wall to get the bullets out.
One of the reasons I'm such a big Russian history fan is that my great aunt Charlotte was a servant for these peeps. She returned to England with a big trunk full of pictures and letters - the few pictures of people are really interesting, because on the back she wrote things about the clothes; more her area of expertise, I think.
Thanks very much!

There's all these apparent "strange markings" on the walls too. So many people have tried figuring out what they are xD

Wow! What a connection! That's really cool
