Description Watercolour, 8.5" by 11".

For my Thursday watercolour class, we needed a "challenge" for a full-colour portrait exercise, and I selected this young lady because of the complicated skin tones and shadows. This is the one I did in class as a demonstration piece.

EDIT: Fixed the lousy scan.

Thanks! I think she has a baby now and everything, but she still looks like she's about ten.

I KNOW.

It's scary. I mean we saw her in that one movie where she played Mary..and....she still looked like she did in Whale Rider.

And she still looks like that. I saw a photo of her with her kid and she looks like an unwed junior high school mother.

I've only seen her in two movies, sadly..

Though the colours are beautiful, the first thing that I had to look at were the eyes! Stunning

That is one of my favorite films, great rendering of her, I recognized her right away! Her face seems a bit washed out still, must have been very strong light on the reference? A bit of yellow to the white would clear that up nicely I expect

Thanks again - I bumped up the midtones a bit in Picture Manager and that seemed to help a lot.

Thanks! I really like the film a lot, and thought she presented a challenge for my portraiture class - I painted this one as a sample. I blame the washed-out look on a lousy scan - it looks a lot better in person. Maybe I can fix it if I run it through a photo programme...

Thank you so much! ^^ I figured someone would recognise her from the film. Great movie, isn't it? After I saw it, I rushed right to the computer and downloaded a bunch of Maori chants and the soundtrack.

It's a good "girls can do anything guys can do" movie - it's got a good message and really beautiful music.

Thank you very much! This young lady is Keisha Castle-Hughes from the movie Whale Rider. She's Australian-born, but made for a very convincing Maori in the movie.

Isn't her mom Maori and her dad Australian? I think I read that somewhere

RamonaQ In reply to TheWindWraith [2009-05-02 22:47:18 +0000 UTC]

That's right. So I guess that makes her half-Maori.

Thank you very much! I used the reference as a "challenge" for my watercolour students working on portraiture - the skin tones and shadows are really tricky. Glad you like it!

Thanks very much! This one was a challenge for my portraiture students - tricky skin tones and shadows, so I worked on it to demonstrate how I'd approach the portrait myself.
