Description Heya peeps! For some time now, I've been wanting to do a tribute to some of the most influential dragon characters in my life. You know the ones--the ones that leapt out from the pages and into your life, the ones who came alive and never went away, for me at least. So yeah, this is the first of them. I'm planning on doing around 5-6 of these triptychs in total, each focusing on a specific group of the dragons who were some of my best friends.

So, these first three are THE three; not only among the very first dragons I ever read and loved, but absolutely fundamental to shaping my interests and preferences for the rest of my life. I thank each of them (and their authors! ) in turn. They're all fairly obscure, so here's a bit about each:

Nothing you love is ever really lost...
Tiamat, the red lady on the left, is from the incomparable Bruce Coville's "Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher," a splendid book for young readers. Jeremy Thatcher, hapless young artist, takes a wrong turn and winds up in Mr. Elives' magic shop. Chosen by a dragon egg, he must hide and protect the infant dragon until she is old enough to return to her own world. Bonus points for research (dragons love milk!) and Jeremy's attempts to name his charge--there is a long list of the great fantasy dragon names, (Heart's Blood, hollah! ) most of which Tiamat sneers at.
...Technically, this picture should really be of Firethroat, another of Coville's dragons (also female, also red...I think I take my love of red dragons from these two ) as she was really my first example of a badass female dragon, but Tiamat had her own novel and more development, so I chose her instead. Besides, they're sort of spiritual sisters anyway.

An adventure's an adventure, all the way to the end...
Zantor. Oh, Zantor. Where do I start? This dragon, and these books ("The Dragonling" series by Jackie French Koller) ARE my influence. They started it all; my love of fantasy and dragons and a very large part of who I am today came from THESE BOOKS. Six tiny little 90-page long things. I never believed honest-to-God epic high fantasy could be crammed into that small a space, but Koller did it. Ritual dragonquests are a way of life in Zoriak, and at the age of 12 a boy has the chance to prove himself a man by facing death at their talons. 9-year old Derek (these are books for really early readers, people!) longs for the day he comes of age--but when he discovers an infant dragonling in the pouch of its slain mother, he cannot bring himself to kill it. Instead he embarks on a quest to return the little creature to its own kind. But some traditions are not so easily changed, and there are many ancient secrets in Zoriak, some of which should remain hidden...

Maybe what I like best about these books is this: the dragons are neither mindless savages nor bumbling sidekicks nor friendly pets nor snobby intellectuals--they are simply dragons, and the grand saga encompassed in these tiny books is worthy of all the praise I can give it. Slave rebellions, burning at the stake, torture, magic (sort of), two moons, strange creatures, dragon duels...seriously, read these books.

All creatures bleed the same blood...
Fiora, the fearsome lady on the right, is the third corner of my pyramid of dragony goodness. You may recognize her from an earlier deviation in my gallery, when she was just a quick scribble--I always wanted to do her a bit more justice, and hopefully I have managed it here. She's from Susan Fletcher's "Dragon Chronicles," specifically the first book: "Dragon's Milk." Long ago, the dragons fled the lands of Elythia, to escape the persecution of men; but their eggs, which much wait for 100 years before hatching, were left behind. Now the hatching cycle has come, and the dams must return to their clutches, although they are put in great peril. Kaeldra, a green-eyed girl--and here, green eyes are dangerous, for their bearers can ken with birds and, perhaps, dragons as well--must beg assistance from one such dam (any guesses? ) for milk to save her dying sister. There are also dragonslayers and secret sects and oodles of baby dragons and, awesomely, gyrfalcons.

There are many, many dragons in this trilogy, but Fiora stands as one of the best-developed and most intimidating, as well as the first introduced, so she gets the spot. I also adore Fletcher's names for the dragons: Fiora, Byrn, Embyr, Pyro, Synge, Smoak, Kyndle, etc. These books are also what put the idea that dragons = birds into my head, and it makes such perfect sense.

...So, that's that. Read the books if you get a chance; they are all geared toward younger readers but absolutely worth it. Wonderful wonderful wonderful books. *literature-gasm* Enjoy!

...And if you comment, tell me about some of your favorite dragons! Who did you love most, and who do you still? I'd love to hear some of your stories!

Haha, take a look at [link] XD I have read Eragon and I do like it, although I'm not as fond of the later books. :3 And I think it's funny how both sets of dragons turned out to have the same colors...I didn't plan it that way but it's kind of cool.

Please do! 8D Bruce Coville is indisputably a mast of everything he touches. I suggest either "Jeremy Thatcher Dragon Hatcher," the book Tiamat is from, or else his Unicorn Chronicles (the other exception to my "I dislike unicorns" rule...first book is "Into the Land of the Unicorns"). "The Dragonling" books were my very first inkling that I was going to have a life-long love affair with fantasy and dragons, and they are phenomenal for such short books. Plus, I taught my little brother how to read chapter books on this series (he was a really reluctant reader until I basically held him down, and he got so addicted to this series he read it three times) and so it holds even more good memories for me now. :3 Absolutely recommended!

Again, thank you for the recommendations!

My three would probably have to be Tiamat, Mnementh, and the fire lizards of Pern. Jeremy Thatcher Dragon Hatcher shaped my childhood and taught me that dragons could be real in your heart, and made me love them fiercely. Mnementh and the fire lizards of Pern (my first Pern book was Dragonquest and I loved the bronzes) were what sealed the deal. Life long bonds with amazing creatures that engulfed the heart and breathed flame and inspired? That was my thing. Lovely pic.

Tiamat, as soon as i herd that name my heart lept. when i was young i used to borrow Jeremy thatcher, dragon hatcher out ALL the time from the school library over and over again. and one day [thanks to dad and ebay XD] i finally got my own copy. i still read it here and there but i loved it so much as well is due to the fact i had a really little toy stuffed dragon who i named Tiamat, she still goes everywhere with me but i dont play with her any more as im a young adult but i have never put her in my wardrobe or out of my sight.

Duuuuude yay! My copy of that book is well-worn and *very* well-loved. And that's so awesome about your stuffed dragon--I had a small collection of stuffed dragons when I was younger, but the one that's stayed with me is a red one that came from our trip to Wales (it was supposed to be for my little brother, but he couldn't care less so I filched it Wales is an awesome country, btw--any place with a dragon on its flag = win). He stays on my pillow, usually...I don't think I ever named him, though, which is really quite weird for me. O.o

If your into Dragon books I have a series you HAVE to read if you haven't read it!

Itz what got my interest in dragons!

It is called The Age of Fire series
Books are called
Dragon Champion
Dragon Avenger
Dragon Outcast
Dragon Strike
and there are two more I dont have yet x3

For once the Main character is a dragon
Its a really good series, and is aimed more for Young Adult readers I would say and I LOVE these books x3

It is based around these three dragons, all siblings, one is a Gray, scaleless dragon named Auron/AuRon, one is a green female named Wistala, and the third is a nameless Copper outcast who eventually gets a name- RuGaard.
The first three books are about... well, each one. First one has AuRon and his life, next Wistala, so on. They meet up in the 4rth and I cant wait to get the 5th and I think there is a 6th
...

I'm working on it! You can go ahead and ask; I can't promise an answer, but I'd love to hear suggestions if you have them! The whole series isn't set in stone yet, beyond the first few sets--a lot of the others are still quite fluid, and I always love finding new dragon books to fall in love with.

Dreki In reply to TheAntimonyElement [2010-06-18 07:47:26 +0000 UTC]

OMG~
Where to start! So many good dragon books

Barbara Hambly's Morkeleb. I think this was the first time I fell in love with dragons, so he has a special place for me. He was such an amazing creature, and the link between him and Jennifer was something I was always jealous of.

Any of the soletaken from Steven Eriksons Malazan series - I love them all and would never be able to pick just one lol.

Asofai's Daenerys Targaryen, and her three dragons, born from fossilized eggs given to her as wedding gifts.

Pratchett's Draco nobilis - something described as "these dragons use magic to combat the physical laws that would normally kill a flapping-winged creature weighing several tons and spitting burning substances" has got to be adorable

Ooo and lets not forget poor Fool's Gold, always teased for belonging to Fizban but noble nonetheless.

OMG i could go on lol >.<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheAntimonyElement In reply to Dreki [2010-07-13 15:14:32 +0000 UTC]

Haha, SWEET! You have no idea how much fun this comment is. :3

1) Morkeleb--I'm actually reading "Dragonsbane" right now; I had gotten it out of the library but hadn't started it, so your comment made me move my butt. I really love it so far; Barbara Hambly's use of imagery and metaphor is really exceptional. I could just read a whole book of her describing landscapes. O.o As long as Morkeleb is anywhere near as awesome as the rest of the books, he's probably getting a place.

2) I haven't read either the Malazan series or Targaryen, but I'll look into them!

3) Ah, PTerry! Of course I just adore his weird take on dragons, because he's brilliant and I adore everything he does. However, much as I love his dragons, the series is mostly focused on individual characters; unless I'm missing something, I don't think any of his dragons is fleshed out enough to warrant full "protagonist" status.

4) Aww, Fool's Gold! :3 Actually, I'm using a different dragon from the Dragonlance universe (from "The New Adventures," actually... I read them a long time ago, don't judge me... >.> )

Please do go on, if you think of more! The hilarious part is that I am literally up to about 8 or 9 sets of three by now, despite my best efforts to keep the numbers down--and I haven't even read most of the books you mentioned! O.o This is going to be such a fun way to learn about good dragon books that I haven't read, and to tell other people about my favs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dreki In reply to TheAntimonyElement [2010-07-23 03:20:31 +0000 UTC]

Lol that's so funny you saying that about dragonlance! I am definately not going to judge, I must admit i read them wayyyy back when i was younger and more easily entertained and i love them!! And I know now theyre a little cliche but thats cos everyone copied their ideas and build on them ... People who judge them and say theyre lame, (and unfortunately i get that from friends too ) need to remember that back there there wasnt so much fantasy stuff around and the original dragonlance stuff was pretty ground breaking and built up so much in peoples minds. There might be better more indepth stuff written now, but dragonlance is still a good read

Anyhow hope youre enjoying Dragonsbane? Makes me want to reread it thinking about it

God I really better not suggest more or youre never going to find the time to draw all these anyhow lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheAntimonyElement In reply to Dreki [2010-09-13 23:38:26 +0000 UTC]

XD Haha, so true! You're absolutely right--Dragonlance seems like the height of cliche now, but the thing is that those books basically invented the genre. Gotta give them some credit!

And yeah, thank you so much--Dragonsbane was a great book! Haha, I dunno how I'm gonna have time for them all--but I'm almost done with the second set, so keep a weather eye out!
