Description I sat yesterday and started drawing with my friends. When I got this idea, I spent the whole day (today) so that I finish it! I used no reference images Not bad for a 17-year-old, huh? Improvement-Club  I would like some comments on the realistic quality, scale details and impression?

Checking out your piece in the Rising Artists Critique 1 folder:

This is incredible, I don't think you needed to qualify it with your age, I would have no idea how young you were. In the thumbnail size, the realistic quality is there through and through. Blown up, the scales still appear very realistic, details are there, and the highlights appropriately follow a consistent light source. The iris and pupil of the eye are still realistic, you did such a nice job making the highlight appear moist, as it would be on an eye. The one place a lost a little of the realism is in the veins on the whites of the eyes. Unfortunately, I'm still learning a lot when it comes to drawing, so I'm not sure how to tell you to make them more realistic, as it is far better than I can do. Also, in that left corner, you lose a little bit of the glassy and 3D look that you have in the rest of the eye. Very nice piece, it feels a bit awkward to offer feedback, because it is such a great piece.

Thank you so much! You dont have to be a pro artist to have an eye for realism. When you look at the piece, you can just compare it to what you see in real life and recognise what needs improvement. I agree with everything you said <3

Your eyes are really amazing, especially in colored pencil. It took me a few looks to realize that you got your signature blended into it as well, which some artists don't bother to do. The only thing I might find critical about this piece is the eyebrow, mainly because I do wonder if there was a way to blend the scales into it. But you do get a sense of the depth of the eye socket with the scaling.  A little shadowing under the eyebrow might help define it more. Still, a very well done piece in color pencil, which I know can be a hard medium to master.

The detail you've achieved in this piece is incredible, especially in the iris and the reflections. It must have taken you ages to individually do all those scales.
Maybe try working in a different media that is more blendable, such as pastels. If you really love working with pencils, then you could maybe give mixing them with chalk a go, because then you could get them to blend and draw over it to get the deep shadows. Prismacolours are another option; granted they are expensive, but they're well worth the money and you can buy them singularly rather then in a set. They're amazing because they have traces of wax in the lead, so you can blend the colours easily and add as many layers of tone to your drawings as they want.
A little tip would be just to add more shading around the eye socket going into the lid, where the eyeball curves in, but other than that it's perfect

Hey there, thanks! All scanned drawings tend to look like the paper is full of unfilled holes. I'm using the much MUCH better faber-castell polychromos. The thing is that I wanted the scales to look worn out so I used white gel pen to make that effect. I usually mix in some oil pastels, cause the polychromos are oil-based and thus don't go with chalks. Though, the comment on the eye socket is really useful! When I think of it, the eye DOES look a bit flat.
PS: This is A4 format

The eye looks fantastic, absolutely gorgeous.
A tip might be to not give each and individual scale the same amount of white on the tip, or let them have the same darkness between the spaces. Where tehre's more shaed, have less or darker white tips.

Looks really awesome, the way you draw and shade eyes is amazing. The only gripe i can think of that i have with this is that the scales seem much too small for lizard skin, but the shading and colors look fantastic. Very well done.

thanks!! Yes, I was thinking that too, but when I first started I found different lizard species, some with really small scales. Otherwise, I thought doing too big scales wouldn't fit into the piece

It's amazingly detailed, a spectacular piece. I can only suggest one thing which would help with the realism of the eyeball itself.
The eyeball is a sphere, set into a socket, so where it slides under the tearduct you'd have a little more shading, and the tearduct itself would have more shading to show it's inset into the face. (Go look in the mirror and have a look how the eyeball curves around and the tearducts are set in with a sort of ridge around them, then stick your fingers on your eyeballs and /feel/ how much they curve around)

I totally love the level of detail you've gotten, the Iris is a work of art on it's own

Oh I hate it when the pencils just won't! I've cheated and used other mediums when that's happened, with mixed results, but yes, the coloured pencils certainly have a limit on just how much you can layer on, super frustrating when you've reached that final polish stage and you can't.

yeah I've tried graphite pencils but they leave a too rough finish, and it is obvious when I use them for shadows, so I figured, it doesnt mater that much

You could try underpainting with watercolours if you have a good enough paper, that can reduce the number of pencil layers you need to do, and you can get the basic shadows in then, it's quite a nice mix of medias. You just need a paper that can handle the pencils and the water, my cheaper watercolour paper shreds when I pencil over it. (It shreds with too many layers of paint too, it's really pretty awful stuff)

Yeah just like I did the eyelashes. The paper is thin, unlike the 160 g/cm2 canson I recently bought which is REALL cool! thanks

This drawing is full of details!! It definitely shows, you put A LOT of time and effort into it! You can see each and every hair on  the eyebrow and the eyelashes...amazing! Not to mention the shaded scales and the rough skin under the eye *q*
I also love the veins in the eyes and the color and highlight reflected in the pupil! <3
Fantastic job, keep it up!

I wish I could draw like this when I was 17 years old. Such attention to detail, I applaud you! Black and Red works perfectly together. Her eye reminds me of Vincent Van Gogh paintings (which is a good thing) Lovely artwork! Keep it up!
