HSMG doesn't really makes sense. might as well call it a light assault rifle

It's all in the caliber: If it fires non-necked-down rounds (aka pistol calibers) in full auto, it's an SMG. If they are necked-down (regardless if semi or full auto), however, it's a carbine. Then if you add full auto capability to it, it becomes an assault rifle.
EDIT: At least that's more or less how it's seen internationally. Certain local laws classify it otherwise, most infamous ones including: Caliber (diameter); presence of a magazine and the accessibility of it's release; presence of a pistol grip; overall length of the firearm; barrel length; or even presence of accessory rails and my personal favorite: Whether or not it even remotely resembles an M4 (so all ARs are banned as well)

But the UMP 45 fires both 40 SW and 45 ACP, which is larger still. So i guess the only thing qualifying this thing as "heavy" would be its barrel length (which is a little absurd for a stock that size) and magazine capacity. Also who could carry 70 round magazines anyway?

No, UMP 45 fires 45 ACP, the UMP 40 fires 40 SW. There are actually 2 models (if you exclude all the off shots), with the former being the first one presented to grab the attention of the US market. With that out of the way, I'd really say that it's up to the author of a construction. Aside from classifications meant to put them in a specific context as weapons, therefore making it possible to create binding laws regarding their ownership and usage; whoever made a weapon system creates its designation as well.
In this context, I'd say you are probably right, since heavy barrel simply implies thicker walls, causing better heat dissipation, which causes less dilation of the material and in turns keeps groups tighter on the target (not that it matters much with sustained full auto fire, where the recoil works against you as well)

That is true it would. The bayonet would be worthless though

good to save a bullet on the lone zombie or two. Thrust through the eye would work.
