If you are looking for Warmachine / Hordes stuff go check out www.terrainthralls.com There are a ton of good tutorials there that will take you from simple up to something like this.
Also check out terragenisis (I don't know if it is a .com or a .net) The community there is extrememly helpful to folks just starting out.

How do you get such a realistic ground cover? Is it just a case of sprinkling lots of different colours of flock and fixing it? Or do you also use spray paints to get the mottled colour... I've built a couple of scenes recently but can't get anywhere close to this!

I actually only use two, maybe three colors of flock. I spread them around pretty evenly but still in a random pattern. Then I overspray the flock with black paint through an airbrush. It's the black that really ties everything together and adds that natural mottled look.

WOW! As someone who builds dioramas, this amazes me - truly! The level of detail is unbelievable! My two main questions are 1) How did you produce the cliff edge? and 2) What materials did you use to make the trees?
WOW WOW WOW

Thanks!
The cliff edge is wall joint compound over extruded polystyrene. (Pink Foam)
It is left to dry and then scrubbed with a welding wire brush that you can purchase at Home Depot or Lowes.
There is a tutorial of the process over at the Terrainthralls website [link] Look for The Broken Coast tutorial.
The trees are a wire armature covered in sculpy. Again, over at the Terrainthralls site I have a tutorial up. Look for the tutorial called Malifaux Tree (Or something like that).

very very nice work. im a big fan of miniature landscapes. what scale figures goes with this?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TheBugKing In reply to PicSapien [2010-10-12 03:38:03 +0000 UTC]
Heroic 32mm.
It's a gaming scale. Since the game is based in fantasy it's kind of loose. But the scale basically refers to 32mm from the bottom of foot to the eye of a man sized figure.

That.
Is pure awesome.
Truly. I rarely see anything model-wise that makes me jaw-drop.
But I just did.

More to come soon.
It's cooler now so I'm getting back to work. An exploratory piece is in the works for a much larger project. The most ambitious to date really.
Once the exploratory is done I'll see about posting pictures.

Lol, at first I thought it was an AT-ST Walker in the Ewok forest from Star Wars. I love that's it's actually more of a folksy theme, and something new (Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars, but . . . I like this kind of stuff better xD ). This looks fantastic! Checking out the game now . . .

Oh man, looks like a movie quality miniature George Lucas would use for a movie. That water is so realistic I can barely believe it isn't real.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TheBugKing In reply to ebony-n-hot-pockets [2010-10-12 03:43:24 +0000 UTC]
The water realism is entirely based on the material used. There is really no skill in it. Just mix and poor!
But that is why the modeling community uses the stuff. It really looks great. It's also really easy to use.
