Description I made this chart when I couldn't sleep ages ago to try and pinpoint where everything went wrong for sonic.
It symbolizes the popularity of Sonic the Hedgehog and how sales increased and decreased over the years from 1991-2008+ present day.
The figures on the left represent the percentage out of 100% of sonic fans that stood by sonic over the years and the figures on the bottom represent the year.

A lot of you may disagree with this chart but before you start ranting off, note that It's just a theory I came up with of how popular Sonic was in that particular year, I put it together in like half an hour or so on a scrap piece of paper based on estimated sales and overall hype and popularity for that year.

To give you a little timeline refresher, each said year would go by (these arn't 100% accurate to the date of first release, just the year they became popular worldwide):

1990: Development for Sega's new mascot Sonic the Hedgehog

1991: Release of Sonic 1

1992: Release of Sonic 2 and SegaSonic Arcade

1993: Release of Sonic CD and various Sonic TV series, Sonic comic series and merchendise worldwide

1994: release of Sonic 3 and various GG games

1995: Release of the 32X and various GG games

1996: Release of Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic 3D, Sonic the Fighters arcade, Sonic OVA in Japan and Sonic Underground TV series

1997: Slow year for Sonic, release of Sonic Jam

1998: release of Sonic R proves dissapointing for some, also the release of the Sonic OVA worldwide, Japan has Sonic Adventure and the Dreamcast to look forward to.

1999: Release of Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, the hype is back on for sonic!

2000: A slow year with Sonic Shuffle and Sonic pocket adventure but hype from Sonic Adventure hasn't worn off yet!

2001: Release of Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic fans rejoice for Sonics greatest Anniversary ever!

2002: Sega out of the console market and Sonic's move to Nintendo proved too much for some, Sonic started to lose dedicated Sega fans where as new fans (strictly Mario at first) found a reason to love him.

2003: The new Sonic TV series Sonic X brought in a completely new fanbase of 13-16 year old anime fanatics but dedicated fans couldn't stand the 4kids alternate voice cast.

2004: Release of Sonic Heroes was a loved new innovation for some, hated amongst others, by now Sonic had become only half as popular as he was back 10 years ago.

2005: Replacing the entire popular VO cast for the Sonic X cast for the Release of Shadow the Hedgehog & Sonic Rush was Sonic Teams worst move, by now Sonic had almost lost it's entire fanbase altogether but luckily its little Sonic X followers kept the small spirit alive.

2006: The release of the very first 'next-gen' Sonic game was a dream come true for fans yearning for a new Sonic Adventure game, but unfortunatly those dreams were shattered the minute they actually played the game... It felt like all was lost for good!

2007: Sonic on the Wii brought back good memories of what once made Sonic great, the internet too was keeping Sonic popular as more and more sonic fans would meet each other on MySpace (roleplaying), Deviantart (fan-art), Youtube (video tributes & youtube poop), and various other forums and hacking cults.

2008: Again the future is looking bleak for Sonic, most dedicated Sonic fans by now realise that Sega cannot be swayed by petitions to bring the old VO cast back and Sega will never change its course of action, The release of Sonic Unleashed proved that Sonic isn't dead yet and still has quite a future ahead of him but it's more than obvious that the 70% of sonic fans that left him are never coming back and all thats left of the fans, dedicated or newer generation have all learned to co-exist in peace on the internet and just enjoy the Sonic Ride for as long as it can last, which may not be forever as people once hoped...

well you misplaced some stuff , for example the GG games started since 1991 , and Sonic and Knuckles was released in 1994 not 1996 , and i believe Sonic Underground was released in 1998 or 1999 , and Sonic Heroes was in 2003 if i remember correctly , but nevertheless this chart is really awesome , you did a great job and i'm surprised how you managed to add all these games to your description , it must've took you at least half an hour to come up with all that ...

Was It!?? I coulda sworn it was 1996 for sonic and knuckles!! I still remmeber the commercials, I got the game in 1996 for Christmas like most kids in my area did, hmm maybe your country got it on a different date to us, I really cant remember with... No wait are you confused with sonic 3? because I know sonic 3 was 1994 and both the games were seperated remember?

But no not all these dates are the dates when the game was -released-, these dates are the dates when the TVshow/game became -popular- worldwide, when they were made avalible in every country, not just japan.
I meantioned sonic adventure twice because japan got it in '98 when the rest of the world got it in '99 and '98 was a slow year otherwise but apart from that these dates are just when the games were at their most popular!

actually our country got it late but in the title screen of the game they say 1994 if i remember correctly , maybe they are talking about Sonic 3 because it's a sequel to it ...

you are right about Sonic Adventure , it was released in Japan in 98 and worldwide in 99 , but don't forget it was brought to the Gamecube and PC in 2003 , many couldn't get it until then ...

I was going nuts, it drove me insane seeing all these screenshots of sonci taking a shower in casinoopolis and how realistic it looked, and knowing that i cant play it, or even afford it until next year! man, it felt like they had recreated the entire world in this game, I couldnt even see trailers or demos or anything, it was just tiny screenshots in game magazines, then I remember when the record store in town had a sonic adventure demo at christmas time and all the kids were FIGHTING AND RIOTING (including myself) to play on this demo!!! omg
I finally got to play in the end and it was so amazing, playing this beach island stage and tails would follow sonic everywhere he went, it looked hard and intimidating at first and I was scared it would be too hard for me (I never got up to that whale bit because someone already left the demo on the second half of the stage) but it seemed to huge and so amazing!

then I remember months later in the PC store there was another demo of sonic adventure which was just the first boss fight with eggman and the egg hornet, OMG IT WAS SO SCARY!!! haha I didnt know what to do and eggman kept firing missiles at me!
man I thought to myself, sonic has changed... this game is gonna be SO hard to master!!

and then for my birthday I finally got the dreamcast and sonic adventure and I was SO HAPPY!! It was my best birthday ever and I'll never forget it!
who says money can't buy happiness??
man, you just can't MAKE memories like that...

man you just reminded me of the first time i got a Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure , you are right these memories are priceless and i always say that money can buy happiness and whoever says different thatn that haven't really tested it yet ...

anyway if it makes you feel any better we got to play Sonic Chronicles not one but two years before Japan could , they are still making it for Japan while we already finished it so many times ...

and the level you're referring to is Emerald Coast , it's one of my favorites but Speed Highway is the best of all , i still remember when i got to Egg Hornet the first time , and the cutscene before that was priceless , for the first time i see a Sonic VS Eggman scene in 3D , it was so cool as if i was watching a movie only it has a gameplay , i don't remember having troubles to beat him but the area when i had to get to Casinopolise got me stuck for a while , i didn't know what should i do especially that i never played any RPG games before and it was my first time , of course Station Square is nothing comparing to Soleana , now that was a real b**ch ...

well if you're sure about it then i won't argue , cause my theory is only based on what the title screen says ...

TheCrimsonEmo In reply to sonictopfan [2009-08-05 13:57:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah not all the time those title screens are correct, it says on sonic 2 and knuckles 1992 AND 1994 which is a bit messed up if you ask me! ...or was it 1994 AND 1994 twice? now I cant even remember!

sonictopfan In reply to TheCrimsonEmo [2009-08-06 19:16:45 +0000 UTC]

i believe it says 1992 and 1994 but i'm not sure ...
