done for my concept art 2 college assignment. i may want to develop the story for these pieces.... for personal and portfolio purposes

Do you use smudge tool or special brushes?
How many layers do you use on average?

smudge tool for some part of the sky, and a handful of special brushes to give some texture. other than that i stick to the defaults
i mainly work on one or two layers. i go up to about 5 or 6 then i merge down. i get less of a headache that way XD

I try and stay away from the smudge tool, it lags up
my computer XD
But I have enough cloud, grass, texture brushes to last me
a life time!
Wow that's not a lot of layers :3 I know some people use like 20 XD

its all about preference. i prefer to keep things simple and light.. also for smudge tool, i turn off smoothing. that way it stops lagging, but you gotta be careful because it gives a rougher effect

Brilliant work. So much so it gave me inspiration for some enemies me and my friend have had a hard time imagining for our own fantasy story/game concept.
