Known as Operation Tonbokiri, the Rocky Mountain Offensive had one simple objective: drive Dover Accord Forces out of the Mountains and back into the Great Plains. Spearheading the assault would be the Muteki Daitai PMC, a long time ally of the Japanese Empire and Coalition. The Mercenaries’ airborne corps, as well as units from the Heshan Army and Republic of China Army, were to be deployed behind enemy lines and push Westward towards the Rockies, while the infamous 718th Division would push East, creating a pincer that would meet somewhere around Reno, Nevada. Kinetic strikes and air raids on American airbases would deny regional air support to the Dover Accord, allowing for the Airborne to keep momentum. From there, the PMC would regroup, and continue pushing East.
Operation Tonbokiri began on April 4th, 2056. While the kinetic strikes and air raids proved to be initially successful, the Operation was undercut by several highway tunnels that had been converted into hardened aircraft bunkers prior to the outbreak of World War III. Due to this failure in intelligence, Airborne units were continually harassed by American fighter-bombers, as well as the airspace remaining contested several weeks into the offensive. As a result, additional Muteki Daitai Ground Forces were brought in to reinforce the 718th Division’s push East, bringing the pincer to close somewhere closer to Winnemuca.
Pausing on June 19th, the Operation would resume on August 8th, 2056. At this point in time, Coalition forces successully penetrated several State and Provincial borders, bringing the War into Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Arizona, and Alberta. The first of several priority targets in the shaping attacks included several Albertan Oil Refineries. This was performed in conjunction with Cuban Forces, who began attacks on American Oil Platforms and Tankers in the Gulf of Mexico, straining the Dover Accord, and to a lesser extent, the European Union’s, fuel supply, leading to a much more conservative usage of aerial assets.
With less resources at their disposal, Dover Accord Forces resorted to scorched Earth tactics in a bid to slow or stop the Coalition. These attempts proved only slightly successful, but came at the cost of much of the Yellowstone National Park, resulting in an area the size of Delaware being wiped from the Map. However, this would ultimately be countered by a Coalition breakthrough in Southern California.
Due to the vast area that was covered, Coalition Forces began to slow to a crawl, as logistics attempted to keep up. In turn, Coalition Units began to requisition resources from local businesses, such as pictured above, with more than suitable compensation. Unfortunately, due to the reprisal attacks that would be carried out against these business owners by local militias, this would further strain manpower, as occupation forces had to be removed from the assault force, causing the offensive to lose momentum and stall by October.
